Re: NPS Designates Historic Landmark Status to Air Crash Sit

My best guess as to why people aren't allowed to visit the sites is also out of respect for the departed. My second guess would be that it's due to safety. I envision a government bureaucrat thinking that trying to carry off a piece of the wreckage as a souvenir could be hazardous, and it may very w...

No Glentucky jokes, please. We've gotten a half-inch here in the East Bay. Hopefully Arizona gets a dumping.

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

"If it is to become a new normal, then that could be an issue. " I think the current weather pattern would be a major issue if the last 3 years are any indication. A monster year followed by 2 dry ones is definitely an issue because we're not set up to cope with that. California's water regime isn't...

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

The storm hitting far northern California now, and hopefully reaching the Bay Area, does look like a pineapple express. Hoping for a lot here. A big storm could really help the water supply up north. Southern California needs the rain the most, though I did see a fair (AKA below average) amount of s...

Re: I LOVE MY REI DIVIDEND!

An economist might tell you that the REI dividend is proof of the high markup it puts on its items, and that it makes so much money off of every transaction that it can afford to give a dividend credit. Additionally, if the markup is so high then it doesn't lose that much by giving you a store credi...

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

You know you're a Westerner when you love the rain. I find that I'm always in a good mood when it's raining. I even sleep better than normal when it's raining.
Need more rain.

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

This series of storms looks add quite a bit of moisture to the southwestern corner of the CONUS. It's not very cold, but the extra precip may end up saving a few salmon and steelhead runs. We're at about 2/3" here in the East Bay with more allegedly coming later tonight. Hope it heads down to SoCal ...

John was such a great guy. I always enjoyed hiking with him, and he'll be with us in spirit. He will be missed. My strongest condolences go out to his family.

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

@Jim_H: Aren't you a ray of sunshine? Sheesh. Unfortunately I agree that a series of monster pineapple express storms is much less likely than continued dryness heading into the dry summer. Monsoons don't happen in Cali except for sporadically in the SE corner. The point about waters from the Gila p...

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

Trinity Lake Labor Day Weekend 2013: http://hikearizona.com/photo=359061 I'm thinking about heading back to Trinity Lake over the Memorial Day weekend, and I'm curious as to how low the lake will be. Trinity along with Shasta Lake is the beginning of the northern half of California's Central Valley'...

Re: Bighorns being released into the Catalinas

I did a little research, and it doesn't look like removing a lion here or there is not much of a big deal. Arizona Game & Fish Game Management Unit 33 encompasses the Catalinas and Rincons basically from Mammoth to I-10, and 22 lions were taken there in 2012. I have no idea if this is an unsustainab...

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

We got about 2/3" today here in Walnut Creek. We needed that like nobody's business. This storm looks like it's going to hit most of California with the notable exception being the far north. It looks like areas above 3,000' are even getting snow, and there's snow on Mount Diablo. This isn't a Pinea...

Re: Hiking alone

Just remember to write your social security # on your shoulder with a Sharpie. I hike alone a lot, and have done so for years, and it sounds like you're doing it the right way. Have a safety contact, be prepared, and don't do stupid stuff. I hiked with Ron quite a bit before he moved to Maine, and h...

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

The media has already mentioned water restrictions, and it could get pretty bad here in Cali. The lack of precipitation is so dramatic that it wouldn't surprise me if it kept going through the end of our winter. That's a pretty scary thing to think about, and even scarier to think it's possible. The...

http://www.sfgate.com/outdoors/article/Rain-gauges-can-t-measure-desperation-5136884.php I haven't laid eyes on the Sierra Nevada in some time, but I'm guessing that they're pretty dry. I live in the shadow of Mount Diablo, and it's typically as-green-as-Ireland by this time of year. Now it's not e...

Re: 2013: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

It's scary-dry here in Northern California. There have been a few brush fires in the SF Bay Area region this December, and that's almost unheard of. The hills should have turned at least somewhat green by now, but are instead the brownish-gold that signifies drought.

Re: Hiking Arizona

One thing's certain, you're better off using a map and a compass instead of just a GPS. A good hiking map specific to Sedona's general vicinity should be available from many sources. I used to own one that was pretty good so they're out there.
