Holy mackerel, that scares me just looking at it on the Internet.

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

http://www.sfgate.com/outdoors/article/Rain-gauges-can-t-measure-desperation-5136884.php I haven't laid eyes on the Sierra Nevada in some time, but I'm guessing that they're pretty dry. I live in the shadow of Mount Diablo, and it's typically as-green-as-Ireland by this time of year. Now it's not e...

Re: 2013: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

It's scary-dry here in Northern California. There have been a few brush fires in the SF Bay Area region this December, and that's almost unheard of. The hills should have turned at least somewhat green by now, but are instead the brownish-gold that signifies drought.

Re: Hiking Arizona

One thing's certain, you're better off using a map and a compass instead of just a GPS. A good hiking map specific to Sedona's general vicinity should be available from many sources. I used to own one that was pretty good so they're out there.

Re: Morgan Fire on Mount Diablo

The burned area looks nice. I figure people freak out in CA more than AZ, for the same reasons they do in the east, an greater urban population. That's only a small portion. The burn area to the south is much larger, but probably beneficial in the long term. It's not beneficial to my allergies, how...

Re: Morgan Fire on Mount Diablo

Fire IS necessary in chaparral communities, and I agree with Lizbeth that people who build homes there do so at their own risk. The fire danger on the east side is (was) much worse because it's too steep for cattle. The west side is grazed pretty regularly, but there are still large areas of chaparr...

Morgan Fire on Mount Diablo

http://hikearizona.com/photoset=13153&start=0 This place is now barbecued. A fire started on the east-southeast side of Mount Diablo here in the East Bay that has grown to 3,700 acres with 20% containment after it began yesterday afternoon. Our spring was average in terms of rainfall, but winter wa...

Re: 2013: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

It's good to read that Arizona's having a healthy monsoon, but I come to tell of a different weather phenomena that we're definitely not enjoying here in the Bay Area. The current weather pattern is funneling smoke from a few wildfires in southern Oregon right into northern California, the Bay Area ...

Re: Poachers

I haven't hunted since I was a teenager, but I still support hunters right to hunt. Poachers threaten everyone's ability to not only hunt, but safely enjoy the outdoors. On a related note I love the show on the Nat Geo channel! I get a kick out of seeing dope growers, poachers, gall-bladder harveste...

Re: Bears on the Rim

It's shocking that all of the national forests in Arizona don't have bear-proof trashcans. I was actually on a trip with the Arizona Bear Society back in the day that installed at least a lot of the bear-proof trashcans there. Pretty cool trip. Safe disposal of trash seems like a no-brainer.

Re: 2013: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

It got to 103 here in Walnut Creek yesterday even though I'm only 27 miles from the coast. The coast was nice at Point Reyes where I was yesterday. Unfortunately we don't have monsoons up here so there won't be rain until October. Fortunately, it will cool down even it's basically going to be highs ...

Re: Bighorns being released into the Catalinas

The Catalinas can either support bighorns or they can't. The introduced herd will be able to survive if suitable habitat exists (food, water, etc.), and knocking off apex predators wouldn't help them. Think about the likely current dynamic of the lion population in the Catalinas. It doesn't look lik...

Re: Loop 2002 extension thru South Mountain - do you care?

Progress is inevitable, but I question how much worth this freeway will provide. It seems like all it would do is divert traffic from the Maricopa Fwy to the Papago Fwy. However, I'm sure it would help spur development of the Estrella and Laveen areas. I'm too lazy to look, but I'm also sure that th...

Re: Big Sur, Pinnalces, Yosemite trip - Advice wanted!

I've had a hiking/camping trip to Big Sur on the short list for a while now (I live in the SF Bay Area-Walnut Creek), and Cone Peak certainly piqued my interest, but unfortunately I can't offer any recommendations as I've never been to the area. One thing you might want to consider about Pinnacles i...

Re: 2012: Rain, Wind, and Sun

Got it. This is my 3rd winter here in the Bay Area. 2010-11 was exceptionally wet, 2011-12 was fairly dry, and this season is starting off like gangbusters. I'm not sure if that's normal for these parts, but it seems weird to me.

Re: 2012: Rain, Wind, and Sun

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/FXC/wxstory.php?wfo=rev An interesting graphic from the Reno NWS office. A lot wetter this December, which is sort of funny as they had been calling for drier than normal this month. Maybe the rest of the winter will be lame? Curiously, while just about everywhere else on th...
