Re: Brick Structure in Monument Canyon

yup taken the military trail a few times. Always wondered why it is not a Forest service trail and there is no writeup online. :sl:

Great trail but like nonot said the mine sight really gets it cluttered up.

Re: Brick Structure in Monument Canyon

Actually the reason I was wondering is because I was reading the book Crooked Mountain and it talks about his house he built near the mine. I dont think this is it. But I do want to go farther into the canyon. I only went a little way in. I turned around because I saw a Blacktailed Rattlesnake, not ...

Re: Hiker dies on 8-mile hike in east Mesa

She was in Usery Mt. Park. I am guessing that this was probably the Pass Mountain Trail. Hits me close to home because I have done this trail many times over the summer.

If she moved here from ND she probably was not ready for exerting herself in extreme midday Arizona heat.

Brick Structure in Monument Canyon

I was just curious if anyone knew what the brick structure at the head of Monument Canyon off Jacob's Crosscut in the Supes was or what it was used for. Was just wondering about that today and was curious if anyone knew or had any guesses.

Re: Fossil Creek rescues

no surprise to me. Every single time I do this trail I see people with very little water or no water at all. Last time saw a lady hiking with only a purse.

Most are able to hike down but the hike out is killer. I usually go through 2-3 quarts of water in only 3 and a half miles.

Re: Dutchman's Mine

Went hiking to Hackberry Spring today. Stopped at the Lost Dutchman Museum on the way back definitely interesting. What I didnt know is that JFK could have possibly had a retreat on the eastern slopes of the supes. There was some interesting stuff in there. If there is a mine is it a possibility tha...

Re: Dutchman's Mine

I dont hike there due to the stories I hike there because it is really a beutiful area. Much better than other places that are a short drive from me. But I do think the stories give me something to ponder on while I am on the trail even if they are just stories, but I am still undecided and will do ...

Even if the mine doesn't exist, the stories of those who have searched for it are quite a treasure

Re: Dutchman's Mine

I have only read the Hiker's Guide to the Superstition Wilderness and it was really interesting to me all the legends and the rich history. I find the tale of the spanish massacre interesting and what I found that was bizarre was the story of Adolph Ruth. I am looking into getting a copy of Thunder ...

Re: Trans-Supes hike, November 2nd-5th

Wow this seems like it would be so much fun, and a challenge, something I would definitely like.

But I will be in school so I wont be able to make it. :(

Dutchman's Mine

I was curious about what your guys feelings about the legend of the lost dutchman's mine were. Did it exist? Is it a hoax? Was it in the Superstitions? If so where are possible locations? I just was curious and wanted to see some other people's opinion on the mine and thought it would make an intere...

Re: Any suggestions for hikes in the Tucson/ Marana Area?

Thanks for the suggestions! I would like to do one day of low mileage about 5-6 miles. And then the rest I could do 7-12 miles round trip. I wanted to get back to the place I am staying before it gets super hot.

Any suggestions for hikes in the Tucson/ Marana Area?

I am heading down there at the end of July for a couple weeks and was planning to do some hiking. I wanted to go to Catalina SP and hike to the Romero pools. And I also was planning to stop at Picacho Peak on the way back and hike the peak one more time. Any other hikes that would be nice. I would l...

Re: Peralta HQ cave in Peters Canyon via Tortilla Flat - July 7

I think Tonto Passes are only for Water Recreation at least thats what I was told by the people at Canyon Lake when I parked there to hike into La Barge. Although there are some trailheads that may have fees.

Re: La Barge Canyon

Saw tons of Lizards and also tadpoles and amphibians... it was awesome to see aquatic leopard frogs somehow find a way to live in the hot , dry desert. Didnt see even one oth...

Anyone done the Deer Creek Trail?

This one sounds like a nice long day hike or overnight back pack that isnt too far from the valley. The TH is right off the 87 just before the junction with the 188. Might head up there this month if its a good trail. Anyone hiked it before? SHould I try it or are there better trails in the area?

Re: La Barge Canyon

Might anyone suggest a better place this time of year? I have been in the Sups just not that area I usually go in from Peralta Trailhead. I dont want to drive far because of gas prices. I am heading to Fossil Creek on the 22nd and 23rd. I dont want to drive far to the higher elevations. I am used to...
