Re: Backpacking Etiquette During Hunting Season

As you said, most of that section is on forest service roads and there should not be any issues there since a hunter should never be shooting across or down a road. I'd be more concerned about the places where the trail was not on the road. That being said, I agree with lindaagm. It is better to be ...

Re: BCT North of Sycamore Rd

@The Eagle Thanks, that's helpful. I forgot to mention that supposedly the trail ends at the Prescott NF, so those tracks are probably a couple miles short of that, but definitely farther than I had seen. I'll probably scout the area out in November or so and hope to start a conversation with the B...

BCT North of Sycamore Rd

I'm looking for information on the Black Canyon Trail, north of Sycamore Rd. All I've found is that it goes about 8 miles north of Hwy 69, and that it is overgrown north of Sycamore Rd. I haven't been able to find any more information than that. I'm starting to plan a thru-hike of it, possibly a yo-...

Re: Very bad overgrowth in the Mazatzal

Sounds like more people need to get out there and hike it. Use is an overgrown trail's best friend! Perhaps, but a lot of the brush, at least last April, was oak and that bush that looks like locust with the thorns growing in, and manzanita. I think at this point a saw, loppers, and machete are nee...

Re: Very bad overgrowth in the Mazatzal

It sounds like the Mazzies are a little much for this group of AZTers. If the complaints keep rolling in, sredfield may have to consider a Mazzy bypass, utlizing vehicle shuttles and vans along highway 87 for the faint of heart Is this really necessary, it appears you've been walking through cat cl...

Re: Looking for a couple of hearty volunteers...

Well since it is spelled "Mazatzal" I think Mazzies is correct. There's definitely no D in there! I think anything that sounds like Madazal or Matazal are the actual mispronunciations! See forum post: viewtopic.php?t=5181&start=100#p73073 All that aside, the colloquial pronunciation is ma-ta-zel, o...

Shouldn't it be Matties or maybe Maddies? I mean Mazzie is just a mispronunciation.

Re: Looking for a couple of hearty volunteers...

A lot of Passage 3, Canelo Hills West is disappearing too. I found it much worse than the Mazatzals were for me last spring. Hiking was very slow as I was constantly losing the trail. I'm not sure I would have made it out if I didn't have my GPSr with the trail tracks to help navigate. The cat claw ...

My friend and I came upon a tortoise flipped on its back once. He flipped it over. Boy was the tortoise mad with that and hissed at him something fierce.

Outdoor latrine

Last spring, while hiking a section of the Arizona Trail, I happened by this toilet. It hasn't been used for quite a long time and I didn't need to use it so I just snapped the picture and continued along. Bonus points to anyone that knows where this is.

The Blue Ridge campground removes the faucetSpigot on Mondays since it's closed on that day.So don't depend on water there on Mondays....:-( Actually, I think it's that the campground closed for the winter yesterday, Monday, Sept. 21. I imagine that's probably the case for most all the campgrounds ...

Re: Is it cheating?

One thing, the Bright Angel trail is almost three miles longer than South Kaibab.

Another thing, unless you need to poo, I don't really think a restroom is necessary as both trails already stink from all the mule piss. Nobody's going to notice any garyc57 urine mixed in. :o

@Baked Alaskan
I don't think you'll need any water drops between GCNP and Flagstaff so I wouldn't waste time with that. See http://www.fredgaudetp... (Passage 35, Upper Lockwood Tank is overflowing, the date/name was just not updated)

Good luck with your hike!

Good luck with your plans to hike the Arizona Trail and have fun with your planning. A week ago I finished section hiking about 111 miles of trail from Flagstaff to the South Rim. At the Moqui Stage TH for passage 36, there were two one gallon water jugs, one 2.5 gallon water jug, and one 2 liter wa...

Re: Questions regarding Passages 30-32

From there, there is no water until some nice clear water under a bridge at mile 5.3 of passage 32. That water is not on the water report or documented anywhere that I've seen so I wonder if it is to be avoided for some reason. Since I posted the above, the databook was updated as follows: If any w...
