Re: Fall 2019 SOBO thru hike

October is a great time to start generally. So far, we are having a pretty good winter, which helps the spring NOBO hikers and also fills reservoirs and regenerates springs. But for the SOBO fall hikers, a good summer monsoon season is what really helps. So - stay tuned. Pretty much figure on carryi...

@PinkEye
I don't think that he's on the trail this year. The post is from a year ago. Happy hiking!

Re: NOBO in the fall?

As long as you're prepared for snow, possible ice and low temps, the risk is comparable to any other season, right. Just do your research and prepare accordingly.

Re: NOBO in the fall?

Generally SOBO is the way to go in the fall. Although you have mountains throughout the 800 miles, you'll spend more time in higher elevations as you head north - meaning more time in possible winter conditions. Fall SOBO hikers leave before major winter sets in up north and they hike to better weat...

Re: Wood Burning Stove

I agree with the NO STOVE option. Hydrate and go! Couscous hydrates well. Add some tuna - yum! You can get dehydrated beans, mash potatoes of course - look around - there's stuff that doesn't have to be simmered.

Re: Thru-hiking NOBO

I know that you're from Vermont and used to snow, but just FYI - this is generally not the time of year to go NOBO. You'll probably be OK in the Sky Islands when you start, but by the time you get into Four Peaks, Mazatzals and on north, you could wind up in a LOT of snow. Generally fall is predomin...

What is the time frame? Is he in Payson now, waiting on a ride? If not, when does he expect he'll arrive there?

Re: AZT South Bound Through Hike Fall 2018 Info

Fall is a great time to do the trail - generally the fall hikers go SOBO and mid-October is the big push. You are at the RIGHT place! Search the threads and you will find all kinds of info to help you plan. Also, if you're on social media, there is a Class of 2018 FB page. Additionally, go to the AT...

Re: NOBO hike late april

@gringodevil Greetings! Hey, any amount of time on the AZT is a good time! The desert will definitely be warming up in April. This year especially has been weather crazy! The sky islands are considered to be the southern part of the state when you're going from desert floor to elevation, such as Mt...

Re: Start Southern Terminus

Yes, you can drive to the parking lot, where the shuttle will drop you. From the parking lot to the border - downhill - is 1.9 miles. Then it's 1.9 miles back up to parking lot - so less than 4 miles round trip. Then head up Miller to Utah!!

Kick Off Event

We are attempting to see if there is still a demand for an annual Kick Off Event. Last year there was quite a bit of chatter about such an event from the thru-hikers so we started the discussion. Please go to this address (copy and paste) and answer a few easy questions to guide us from here. Thanks...

Re: NOBO hike late april

That time of year the desert will be getting pretty toasty. It could be doable IF you plan to carry large amounts of water, salty foods, hike early and late - taking the day to conserve energy at lower elevations. It'll be a great time to be up in the sky islands and from the Rim country north, but ...

Re: 2018 Water Reports Border to Picket Post

Well, not sure if others are out there, but we just cached 10 gallons at mile 250.4 NOBO via the app - for any AZT hiker. If you're using the old paper maps, add 2 miles to that number. Just be sure and take out the empties please. The trail steward was also out and he said that there was a cattle t...

Check with Ken's Shuttle service if the hotel doesn't shuttle. Go to the ATA site, Trail Resources in the pull down menu for shuttle resources.

You can also check the new Day Hikers Guide for additional access points to cache water. If you are on FaceBook, the Arizona Trail Class of 2018 is another way to stay current on trail conditions and water sources. Lot's of helpful info and folks on there too! We have received some rain this past we...

Re: Permits

If you stay at Colossal Cave Park on passage 8 or Grass Shack or Manning Camp in the Rincons, you need a permit and can only camp in designed areas. If you hike through those passages and stay outside of the Saguaro NP boundary, no permits are needed.
