Re: Favorite Loops? And tips?

So the trail really doesn't have any loops since it's a continuous trail from border to border, but there are options out there to use the trail for part of your loop and then use another adjoining trail to get yourself back to your starting point. 2 "loops" that would be all Arizona Trail are the 2...

I didn't realize that the Jeepers replaced water that often. A big THANKS to them!! Wow!

Re: Permits

And you need a permit if you plan to stay at Manning Camp or Grass Shack in the Rincons. If you hike right through them - no permit needed. Same with the GC. If you do R2R in a day - no permit needed.

Re: Question about weather for AZT veterans...

Generally, we have very few bugs. When the saguaros bloom we get our gnats but that won't be til later. You can still be getting snow on the North Rim in May, so be prepared! Sky Islands in the southern part of the state and any mountain area can see snow storms in March for sure. Right now, as I'm ...

Re: AZT thru hike in March 2018

I used a Big Agnes Seedhouse 1 UL for years and loved it. Just switched to Big Agnes Copper Spur 1 UL and am quite happy with it. Some things I liked better with the Seedhouse, such as it having a narrow footprint - I could put it up just about anywhere. But, I am really enjoying the side entry of t...

Re: Section Hike Advice

Wow! Has anyone looked at the new resource, "Arizona Trail Day Hiker's Guide", by Jake Baechle?? It's wonderful! Sure wish I'd had this when I was doing the trail by passage. Even now, it's a great resource since I'm still out there doing passages with friends. And it's FREE as a member. Check it out!

Re: Bear bagging

I almost always sleep with the food in my tent and, really, it's not a good idea. Hang it outside - it takes zero effort. Sky Islands, up north, the Supes - any place that you are seeing bear sign - hang your bag up as high as you can. Snakes - you'll come across them but you are NOT their food sour...

Re: Hiking in January

January is a great time to knock out the warmer sections for sure. 15 may be dry - check with the steward and the online resources in the next week or so. You can cache water quite easily around passages 5 - 8 as you head out. I think you'll find your plan will work - you will just have to be checki...

Re: Number backpacking in one group

@regenerator I'm guessing that you will all start at the Mexico/Arizona border and hike NOBO 10 days. Depending on your pace, you may then get through Passage #9 - Rincon Mountains (at a pace of about 15 miles a day). If you plan on staying at Manning Camp or Grass Shack (the only 2 places within S...

Re: Starting the AZ in May

Another option is to flip. Do the desert as soon as you arrive in May - that would still be warm/hot, but early morning and evening hiking would work. Then do the sky islands, then the plateau. But, since we're a short trail (compared to the Triple), that's a lot of shuttling for an 800 mile hike. B...

Re: Favorite Water Treatment?

I use a Sawyer regular size. Ya, it clogs and I just backwash it. Easy enough to do and I love the convenience of just letting it hang and filter while I do other stuff.

Re: Nov 250 Mile Section Hike: Advice, please

Have you hit the AZ border yet? Up north is looking good - cold but clear. Grand Canyon would be beautiful and a MUST SEE, then you can hike south to Flag - no worries with snow for now. Pretty hike and easy enough miles. If you'd prefer desert, then Four Peaks south, through the Superstitions and o...

Re: AZ Trail FR 4 Resupply Box Help (17-041)

@Old_Pueblo So, are you actually going to Superior / Picket Post? That's the section where you will cross FR4. Not sure what's in that box - it's VERY difficult to access. We will be doing trail maintenance on the Alamo Canyon section next weekend - Veterans' weekend and will probably be adding wat...

Re: Page to Stateline on Tuesday/Wednesday (Sep. 12/13)

You've got at least 1 hiker ahead of you - probably in the Superstitions by now. Look at the pull down menu on the AZT site for resources and see if there's a shuttle service for the State Line CG.

Re: Looking for car shuttle assistance

@nonot I'm heading to Flag a couple different weekends. Not sure if that's something that would work for you, but I'd be happy to drop you somewhere and/or bring you back to the Valley. TENTATIVE plans: up early on the 26th and back mid-day on the 27th of Aug. That may change to going up the night ...

Re: AZT # 12 Hammock

Hm. I know that those of you who hang can be pretty creative but that section, especially when you get lower, is mostly scrub - small trees / bushes and cacti. You may find a few scrub oak that you can hang from, but???

Re: Shuttles from Sierra Vista to AZT southern terminus

There's a lot of hikers starting then - or close to then. Check with Ken's shuttle service - listed on AZT website in pulldown menu and/or check FB Arizona Trail class of 2017. I'll bet you'll find someone heading out that you can work out a ride with.
