Re: Snow heading NOBO, starting Late March

Barring a late spring storm, I don't think you'll have any snow by then, assuming that you are starting at the Mexico border.

Re: Spring 2017 Thru Hikers

@ttretta Thanks, Tretta. Very helpful. Anybody else have any thoughts on the heat and water situation being manageable in the lower sections from the Mexican Border for hiking the first part of May? As stated, May is not the best time to be in the desert trekking, especially when the trail offers s...

Re: Spring 2017 Thru Hikers

Snow won't be an issue except one never knows about the North Rim / Jacob Lake area. They could get snow / slush into the end of May. It's been a wet spring and water is pretty reliable right now. Should help but by April it will be drying up on the lower / warmer regions. Since you can probably cov...

Re: Questions on Passage #14 & #15

@Kramirez 14 and 15 are absolutely do-able in 4 days as long as you're a reasonably good hiker. Pretty easy sections. Shuttling may be a little tough from the end of 15, but you might be able to hitch. If you plan to stay at the Chalet in Oracle before starting at 14, you may want to contact Marni ...

Re: the shuttle details

I'd at least get a 5+ miles up the mountain from the parking lot myself. Maybe someone else has had experience with camping lower and will weigh in.

Re: the shuttle details

Or, just go directly to the trail head, even though it may be mid day already? (I guess ideally it would be good to get some distance from the border patrol action before sundown.) When we did this section, we didn't start up Miller until almost noon. If you get to at least Bath Tub Springs, you'll...

Re: Southern Hiking in February

This is from a hiker who posted this week - Feb. 9th: {In case you are wondering, the north side of the Huachucas isn't so bad right now. I went through late yesterday afternoon, and it was just fine for walking. Plenty of postholing and what not, but easy to follow with no sketchy spots. I'd sugges...

Re: Resupply north of Grand Canyon

I was told that in addition to the restaurant and bakery, JLI has a small selection of groceries such as bread, peanut butter, chips, granola, canned Vienna sausages (don't read the list of ingredients), tuna salad kits etc. I was told the hours in early May will be 8 to 8 daily, with longer hours ...

FireFly wrote:On a NOBO thru-hike starting mid March, should I bring microspikes?
For now, I would say, YES, bring the micro spikes. You can always put them in your bounce box. High country has received a lot of snow this past week. How much more is coming - if any - and how long is hangs on is hard to say.

Re: Long(est) water carries

@rcorfman After reading a bunch of blogs, my wife and I decided on 5 Mar as a start date as it seems like a good compromise between freezing/snow and heat/dry water sources. With the winter that AZ is getting this year, I am starting to think about starting a week or even two weeks later. I'd be in...

Re: Spring 2017 Thru Hikers

Planning a thru hike in March of 2017, has anyone used the AZT APP downloaded on their phone for navigational purposes? How does it work when there isn't phone service? Was it worth using? Thanks! Yep. The app works without cell service and is pretty handy! Quick way to check if you're on the trail...

Re: Spring 2017 Thru Hikers

I'm also planning a NOBO thru-hike, probably starting around 15 March. I don't want to walk too many miles every day so I have made a preliminary plan that requires 57 days walking (based on where I think I can camp and find water). On top of that I will add about 10 extra days for setbacks, zero d...

Looking at Google Maps and Google Earth, I see an unnamed road about one mile to the west of Montezuma Pass, it starts at Eighty Spring, right on W. Montezuma Canyon Road, and goes south to Yaqui Canyon and the border. http://www.ninevehsoft.com/hikes/aztsta.jpg That leaves you one mile directly we...

Re: Passage 11 Santa Catalina Mountains

The last few miles of the Pusch Wilderness Bypass - the Crystal Springs section - is a challenge! I do not think a horse could make it through there. Bikes would have a time as well. The other trails of the Bypass are great although Butterfly has a big elevation change. As a hiker, stick to the Wild...

I know this would add a little weight, but would a very thin pad protect the air mattress from thorns? I really like sleeping on my air pad. Just remember, Arizona has healthy and aggressive sharp objects in abundance! A foam pad will offer more protection, but they will go through that and your ai...

Temporal Gulch - passage #4 is very pretty! Passage #5 - Kentucky Camp takes you though old mining area where you can see some mining equipment if that's your thing. I found the mining features in 4 and 5 interesting but I have a little background in that area. 5, 6, 7, and 8 are passages that you c...

I am planning a NOBO thru hike starting March 7, 2016. I would appreciate any feedback about this start date being early or late, and also to see if anyone wants to share transportation from Tuscon airport to the trailhead. Can't wait to hike this beautiful and challenging trail. You'll want to wat...

What is a reasonable date for starting in April that will avoid roasting in the desert? Thanks. Wazo wazo@usa.com :y: Since you are from the Valley, you know how our springs can be - that heat can come on early or we can have a beautiful spring. Depending on how many miles you plan to cover in a da...

Agreed with all above comments. Running gaitors, such as Dirty Gurl, are WONDERFUL for keeping those little pebbles out of your shoe - and they will cause you way more concern than snakes!

I'm planning on a late season SOBO hike leaving Utah border on 9/30. Would love to know if anyone else will be out there! I will be out there section hiking in Oct. and Nov. - pretty much in the middle as I have passages 19, 20, 22 - 25 to do yet. Plan to be on GC South Rim the 2nd week in Oct. als...
