Re: How Late is Too Late to Start a SOBO AZT Thru?

I'd consider crampons also - just in case of accumulation on the mountains. There's times that you are going along the side of a steep slope, or going up a steep slope, or, with down a STEEP slope heading to Romero Pass!

Re: How Late is Too Late to Start a SOBO AZT Thru?

Well, you're dealing with weather - so anything goes. But, you will hit some COLD weather and snow - but who knows how much - anywhere from Jacob's Lake through the Supes. Less likely to have accumulation once you're south of 4 Peaks. Supes may well get some snow in Dec. but chances are it won't be ...

Re: Water on the AZT in the Fall

Be sure and check each passage - here on the forum there are water reports available under each passage . Also, from the AZT site, look at the pull-down menu under Trail Resources - go to Water Resources - for water reports. I've just been on Mormon Lake and Happy Jack and there was water just about...

Trail Days 2016

I'm confused. I show 2 events on Friday, Sept. 9th. The Grandest Walk at 7:00 at the Coconino Center for the Arts and Grand Canyon End to End at 6:00 at the NAU Cline Library. Are both events happening at the same time? Am I reading something incorrectly?

Re: Some AZT food questions

As you go into Patagonia, you will find a small grocery store. If you're flexible, you will be able to find food for resupply. It will be a limited variety, and you may wind up with a jar of peanut butter and tortillas, but you can get food. This will be similar in Kearny and Superior if you hitch t...

Re: What to pack?! Oh my!

Food - start sorting out your nutrition. Look on sites for the long distance hikers such as CDT, PCT. Most long distance hikers will have extensive blogs about their food. You want the most nutrition for weight ratio you can get but they will all tell you - GOOD food and variety matter! Research and...

Re: Camping options between North Rim and Park boundary?

@sandyfortner ....I live here. May-October I guide North Rim day hikes. and there are about 500 people living here during the summer season (may-oct). I'm lucky enough to have a rather decent sized RV parking spot so i can easily fit a tent camper in front of my "rig" :lol: come on over friends! Co...

Re: Camping options between North Rim and Park boundary?

you can ask someone who lives on the north rim if you can pitch your tent in their yard, free of charge and in a safe place...i'm sure that person would say yes. :) Of course the problem with this is that no one lives on the Rim. Yes, there's housing for the Rangers, but they would refer you to the...

Re: Advice on Smart Phone/Carrier

I have a Samsung Galaxy 5 with Verizon and am very happy with it. I'm sure that the phone has more capabilities than I, but the camera is easy to use and takes great pics. If I keep it on AIRPLANE mode, it will last me pretty much for 3 days - that's taking pics, using the Arizona Trail app - someti...

Re: AZT Passage Divisions?

As a section hiker, I always want to end a hike / backpack with a passage DONE! But, sometimes that doesn't work due to access. I've often wondered why Summerhaven, not Romero Pass, was the ending point for 11, but I'm assuming it's because it aligns with the wilderness boundary. But, doing a passag...

Re: AZT thru hike...

You're in the right place! Search the forum and look at what past hikers have posted. Then keep checking back. I'm sure that as the next "season" approaches, there will be potential thru-hikers posting. Generally, you'll find the spring season starts the beginning of March and NOBO is preferred. Fal...

@joebartels
Oddly enough, it comes with no way to attach it to anything. All that is accessories that have to be purchased separately.

Re: solar charging devices

@SredfieldI'm betting there's a way to make it feasible. Thought about attaching it somehow to my hiking pole. They sell an arm band accessory so that you can wear it. It's definitely a good idea but I guess it needs some dinking around with to see what set up works best.

Re: solar charging devices

@CannondaleKid
Yep, that is true for sure. And had it been advertised as NEEDING to be worn, I would never have bought it. I try very hard to not have things hanging off of me or my pack -sometimes I have to - but really try not to. Oh, well, it was worth a shot. Don't know if you don't try!

Re: solar charging devices

I received my AMPY just in t time for spring break backpacking. The box and enclosed propaganda assures you that you can drop it in your purse or computer bag and it will still charge - slower than if running or biking - but will still work. I left with it fully charged via the USB port and my frien...
