@chumley
I love dusk hiking, especially with some moonlight! Got in a good half hour or so in the Tortolitas last night.

Re: Reavis Ranch Nov. 11-13 2016

I will be hiking in Friday afternoon with two compadres. I would imagine it will be dark by the time we reach the ranch, but no worries. Weather is looking pretty great, certainly nicer than when I was there a few years ago in January...

Re: Reavis Ranch Nov. 11-13 2016

If everything works out, I would probably hike in from 109 south Friday afternoon, trip to Mound & Circlestone Saturday, and hike out Sunday morning. I will have to confirm a little closer to November, but this sure sounds like a good trip.

Re: Humphreys Acclimation Camp next Friday PM ?

I would second the dispersed camping in the Friedland Prairie area, we did that a few years ago and there are some nice spots to be had. Very short drive to the Snowbowl TH in the morning.

Somehow I feel like that might affect the structural integrity. Or at the very least, it seems to go against the spirit of things... :D

Re: How Much Weight Can A Day Pack Handle?

I have a Camelback Rim Runner that I have gotten up to about 30 pounds in on occasion, usually doing the sherpa thing for the family if we go out for a hike. I have used this pack for just about all my non backpacking trips for the last 4 years and it has virtually no signs of wear except for the co...

Re: The 2016!! Cyclical totals discussion thread.

I am looking pretty off from last year, more family stuff going on I guess, and me getting that kayak and actually using it at least once a month. No worries, I can certainly benefit from some upper body work out too. I am actually going to have to kick it up a notch here to even get back to 2014 nu...

Re: What are some good field books to get?

Native Plants for Southwestern Landscapes by Judy Mielke is a favorite of mine. Gives a good spread of plants native in the lower to middle deserts of the SW with color pictures, and a nice selection of info. Won't have all the small annuals, but does a pretty good job with the bigger stuff.

We are planning on doing the Hellsgate trail to Tonto Creek this weekend, got the OK from the wife weeks ago and can't pass up the opportunity...We are going to get the hiking done early in the morning and then spend the rest of the time in the creek until the sun is down. At least I won't need to b...

@Tough_Boots
Horse is not uncommon in the meat industries elsewhere...I once got into a discussion with a Finnish in law that was meant as an off color joke but turned a little serious for my liking. Mostly because he was 6' 8" and at least a solid 260...

I ended up eating a few (not by choice) on my trip up Pickepost yesterday. I could do without those dang things...and I have even stayed clear of the McDowells this spring.

Re: Agave sticking treatment

I have a portion of an Agave spine that is stuck in my tibia, and has been for over a decade. Calcified by now I am guessing, and probably never coming out. Agaves do not have any spine toxins, so like everyone else has mentioned it mush be infected. If you can dig out the broken tip it will probabl...

Re: Outdoor clothing for this winter/spring

I really dig the 32 degrees shirts, I have a few and they have become my hiking standard shirt. Nice and cool, quick dry, and they don't seem to hold the latent stink of some of my other regular use hiking duds.

Re: The 2016!! Cyclical totals discussion thread.

I am definitely down in stats from this time a year ago, but then again I did not do the 7 Summit Challenge to start the new year. I haven't had quite as much time for hiking so far this year, so it seems I am doing more 5-6 mile hikes instead of my usual 7-8. Hitting plenty of different trails and ...

Thanks for the responses! Looks like a fun trip without much technical skill needed, but never hurts to make sure. We all have vests too, that is a must have in my book.
