Re: The 2015! self propelled totals thread.

With the year coming to a close, I started December with 137K for AEG. I have already gotten in about 3000' this week, so I am going to make a push to try and crack 150K if all goes well. I know this doesn't stand up to some of the big dogs, but it looks pretty sweet for my about once weekly hiking ...

Re: On what hike in AZ have you been the most nervous

Climbing up the west side of Bren Mountain in Tucson this summer. No trail, scree-filled and really steep. When I did this it was mid-monsoon and I had a lightning storm on the next ridge over threatening to make this a really bad choice. All ended up well, but I did hightail it down the other side ...

Re: The 2015! self propelled totals thread.

For me, hiking (day hike or backpack) assumes the role of gym, church, and psychologist. I love the alone time to think through my problems of the day, or some days it is nice to just have the headphones in and ignore the real world problems for a while. This has become one of those things I think a...

Re: The 2015! self propelled totals thread.

My first hike this year was the Phoenix Seven Summit Challenge, and that definitely has ended up directing a good bit of my hiking this year. I tend to gravitate towards peak bagging, especially on my solo hikes. Something about the sense of accomplishment and views at the end of the trail make moti...

Re: I'm not sure how to phrase this but I'm curious...

I had an almost search and rescue incident a few years ago when I was hiking with a few friends and we got separated. We were all three going at a different pace, our thinking was to hike up the ridge and meet at the top. I made it up first and waited, but when I saw our third hiker (and not the sec...

Re: Balancing Hiking with Strength Training

I am a dad with two young kids, a full time job, and a house to take care of. I am glad to get one good hike in every week (6-8 miles and 2000-2500' AEG), and then mixing in one backpack or bigger hike on the weekend just about every month. I have not been inside a gym in many years, but I find lots...

Re: Hydration packs

My Camelbak 3 liter finally started getting that funky taste after 3 years of use (I do try to empty and dry it within a few days of hiking each week), I filled it up with some white wine vinegar and soaked it for a few hours. Rinsed it out, let it dry, and then rinsed and dried again. Funky taste/ ...

Re: Boots for hot weather hikes

I don't have the Targhees, but I am currently working through a pair of Verdi II mids I had picked up last year on clearance ($65 with shipping). I have gotten a good 200+ miles on them, and should be good for at least another 100 if not more. Pretty much used solely on rocky low desert hikes, this ...

Re: I-10 eastbound near Desert Center collapsed

Made it through the detour yesterday, no delays for us at all. They have the speed limit down to 50 for a few miles with some dps there just to make sure. Kudos to CALTRANS for getting this up and running so quickly, the damage is pretty impressive. There were still some areas of standing water out ...

Re: I-10 eastbound near Desert Center collapsed

Yeah...so I am in Anaheim right now for the family's first trip to Disneyland. We drove out Sunday, and passed over this bridge about an hour or two before it failed. It was just starting to rain in Palm Desert, but by the time we hit LA it was on full force. Huge storm, brought all of the freeways ...

Re: Solo Backpacking

I do 90% of my day hikes solo, and I am starting to dabble with solo backpacking as well. I really enjoy the solitude and being able to go at my own pace. I like being able to push myself and see just what my flawed vessel is capable of. The biggest reason I have not done more solo backpacking is my...
