Re: 2018 Fire Season

@Tough_Boots Brings up a dilemma I was just apart of in New Mexico, a group I was semi social with in afternoon, sparked up a fire at a backcountry lake that night. I debated back and forth for nearly an hour whether to go over and ask them to put it out, or not. Ultimately, I just let it go, becau...

Re: 2018 Fire Restrictions

@DixieFlyer Oh I did miss your point! lol Ya I think in general most FS pages could use a little work, I do notice however, that when I was clicking on a few over the last week to research some hikes, there was a survey related to quality of the website, so maybe they do acknowledge that they could...

There is an east and a west trail, look at some photo sets, read some triplogs and choose the one you think sounds the most pretty, I don't think you can go wrong IMO...

Re: Book: 10 yrs recovery of Mazatzals from Willow Fire

@Tough_Boots Ya I read most of it now too and had a similar feeling, the Thoreau, Aldo comparisons might be a tad over stated. He also dedicated like a half a page to a pile of clothes he found, which he attributed to illegal immigrants, kind of made me laugh a little to myself...

Re: GC Battleship Question

From the rim doing it my first time, I did it in just under four hours, so its a pretty quick trip overall. I looked at route a little and it looks like I left BA Trail at about 6:30 a.m. to start the traverse over and was back on BA around 8:40 a.m. I also had to take a few minutes here and there t...

Re: I LOVE MY REI DIVIDEND!

@lindaagm
I feel your annoyance at REI, mine is just due to their high prices. I still go there, but honestly most of my dividend was from using their credit card. Sale items, or occasional 20 percent coupons are still a perk there for me though...

Don’t forget to add Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, Delta, American Airlines, Walmart, Dicks, Kroger, L.L. Bean, Mountain Equipment Co-op and the state of Florida to that “never again” list of yours, all those bastards trying to push for sensible gun laws too! SOBs 😉

Re: Bear bagging

I use a slightly different strategy for bear bagging. I make several non lethal bear traps and then capture and bag all bears within a ten mile radius of my camp, I hang the bears for the night, so they can’t get into my food and then release them the next morning...

Re: 3 day backpack from Miles Ranch - loop preferred

@Mr_Squishy Although there is a chance for a little war somewhere along Frog Tanks, I would fill up at Rogers Trough on your first day and then be somewhat prepared to not find any water until you get back into the Reavis Ranch area on day two (if sticking to the loop in the book you described) Fig...

@Hippy @nonot Table Rock Spring is actually reliable, just not at location marked on map, at that location is a dilapidated spring box/trough, the more robust source and trough can be found further up canyon, I did not post route because of some ruins I visited in area, PM for more details @Hippy ,...

Re: Cherry Creek Rd FR 203

@Oregon_Hiker I saw a picture of someone going around it from about three months ago now. Someone came out and just dug into the bank on the side of the boulder not bordering the drop off and made more room to pass there, it looks like machinery was used. I guess moving the boulder was out of the q...

Re: Pogo pack exoskeleton lightens your load

@chumley Interesting...the Army/military has been working on this for awhile too, mainly in a response to the fact that the mountains in Afghanistan were breaking off soldiers, due to the excessive combat loads...In fact, a few soldiers in our unit took part in a testing at Yuma Proving Grounds.. T...
