Re: Oregon 550 for $257

Joe,

This was my first triplog/route posting, so it's definitely a little rough around the edges. Thanks for the tip! I will give that a try, especially for future hikes.

Re: I'm BAAACK! How about suggestions for a FOUR-DAY HIKE??

I have created a couple loops in the western supes using the route manager, and I made them "public". Not sure what that means... :) Anyway, I haven't quite managed to create the 30+ miler that I am looking for, and I am not sure about any specifics about the loop (water, elevation, etc), but they s...

Re: Backpack-compatible holster options?

Not to dredge up an old thread, but as this is still a valid question for many hikers, I will share my solution. My setup is made possible because of my pack: the Kelty Falcon 4000 (newer version is called the Falcon 66). This is a military pack, with tons of molle webbing, including the waist belt....

Oregon 550 for $257

Although I am sure many are aware, with the new Oregon 600/650s coming out in a few weeks, there are some deals to be had on the older Oregon 450/550 models. I bought a 550 last month, and although I've only used it on one hike so far, I am loving it, so I wanted to make sure to spread the word. It ...

I'm BAAACK! How about suggestions for a FOUR-DAY HIKE?????

Ok, so I got the hookup on the "Rogers Trough-Angel Basin-Frog Tanks-Reavis Ranch" loop thanks to SupersitionGuy. :thanx: But now I want to go BIGGER!!!!!! :D We are now scheduling a FOUR-DAY hike in a couple weeks, to take advantage of the kid's spring break. I am not trying to be a mooch. But here...

Re: Suggestions for WINTER Desert Backpack (3 day)

Did you have sunshine every day and how was the temps when you left your campsites in the mornings? Over time you will forget about those two cold nights and savor the rest of the trip. Great memories! :y: The temps definitely got down into the 20s. It wasn't life threatening, we were just unprepar...

Re: Suggestions for WINTER Desert Backpack (3 day)

Just to follow up on this. We DID go backpacking that weekend, and we DID hike the loop suggested by SuperstitionGuy! We started at the Rogers Trough Trailhead (4800'), hiked down the canyon (109 to 110) to the Cliff Dwellings and then Angel's Basin. There were a ton of scouts already pitching tents...

Re: Suggestions for WINTER Desert Backpack (3 day)

well, I agree that the Sups sound like a safer bet in the spring. That is why I posted here--I was hoping for something lower and warmer. Otoh, contrary to this last weekend, this upcoming weekend is shaping up to be clear and warm, which is the only reason I was considering it. I will check the wea...

Re: Suggestions for WINTER Desert Backpack (3 day)

Wow. I didn't expect so many responses so fast!!!! This weekend is supposed to be mid 70s and low 50s in the valley, and clear. What is the typical drop in the Superstitions? (I mostly care about the overnight lows...) Below freezing? I have never even considered a shuttle (I honestly don't even und...

Re: Are there viruses in AZ stream water?

I grew up just drinking from the stream/lake/whatever, and I had the same run of good luck. And in recent years, I had mostly done only car camping, where I brought all my own water. But then I started backpacking with my family last year, and I never even considered drinking unfiltered water. I pri...
