Re: Catalinas- Seen any big metal doors?

Seems I've read about nearly every mountain having some kind of "dark" entrance to the underworld, typically guarded by big, metal doors. The Panamints in Death Valley - their doors lead to some combination of 1) the hidden gold 2) the underground, under ocean tunnel that connects So Cal to Catalina...

Hey! My sprained foot's healing!

In another thread I mentioned that I injured my arch somehow on a treadmill. SpiderLegs recommended trying barefoot treadmill. I'm a big, overweight guy. I figured barefoot would be totally out of the question. I'd need all the padding I could get to cushion my big, heavy blob of a body as it came c...

Re: Trail photographers beware

I've thrown a full sized mag light flashlight at, and hit, a raccoon, only to watch him shake it off and look at me as if to say "Leave me alone, I'm breaking into your food storage bag". Armadillos are another tough little animal. They aren't much match for an 18 wheeler, but in camp, they pretty m...

Again, that's very helpful. I'm not sure what the conflict is here, DM.

Re: Recommend Treadmill Shoes?

You're all correct, of course, about the snake thing. I'm not in the demos, I pay attention very well, and Chum you're right. My foot's hurt right now due to the treadmill, not due to a snake. That's all reassuring, of course. Still the prospect of that half million dollar hospital bill just makes m...

Re: Recommend Treadmill Shoes?

... man I hate foot injuries! I hate foot injuries and my fear of snakes. Both have me sidelined right now. I just read that 7 people have been bit by rattlers in the past 7 days in PHX. And I've come really close to at least two. And that's only the bites that got reported to poison control. It's ...

clearly i need more gear Truer words have never been spoken. You need enough gear so that you realize you need a bigger house. Then you start the process over again till that new house becomes too small for the newer and larger amount of gear. Repeat till death. Then your significant other sells th...

Re: Recommend Treadmill Shoes?

...I have gone barefoot on a treadmill for 5 minutes or so as part of my warm up. Helps to strengthen your feet and walking barefoot won't get you injured. After 5 minutes hop off the treadmill, throw on your shoes and start running. I think I might just investigate that. Thanks Spider. I'm sidelin...

I guess I don't really know WHAT they have on TV these days. They don't have "Hiking with the Stars" do they?

Recommend Treadmill Shoes?

I hope this is on topic enough for a hiking forum. I like to get on the treadmill in our front room or in the gym even during hiking season, but especially during off season. Something about the repeated mantra effect. In any case, has anyone found any particular type of shoe to be better suited to ...

Re: Gear Storage

There's no TV in our home. The time that would be spent watching American Idol and Dancing with the Dumbells is spent doing outdoorsie stuff. With no disrespect to this fine website, the interwebs are equivalent to Dancing with Dumbells. It's just a different means to waste time and pollute your he...

One of my faves is the oncoming hiker with ear buds. I can't hear his music but he's making "air faces" and singing Bon Jovi, acappella to the rest of the world.

Re: Gear Storage

In our house, our gear is our furniture. No coffee tables in the Lumpy Rancho. "Living room" has a weight machine, a treadmill and an upright bass (the stringed instrument, not the fish). Other great room has saddles, boots, packs, rain gear. Depending on the season, floor space or hooks on the wall...

Feral Horses in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve/Mtn Park

"Feral" by typical definition = animals that once were domestic but are now roaming the wild. In the case of horses, I think the definition gets stretched sometimes to include domesticated horses that are allowed to roam free (accidently or deliberately) and may seasonally or occasionally return to ...

Re: Pipeline in McDowell Sonoran Preserve?

OK, I've been trying to dig up more info on that pipeline. Here's what I'm finding out. The start of the pipeline is indeed at "Mountain Spring" on Tom's Thumb trail at trail marker TT13. It's interrupted (opened) at the oasis where the running water crosses the trail, as johnlp points out. It picks...

Re: Best Trail Tips and Tricks for easy tasty grub!

I guess I'm like Gary. I don't like to eat on a hike or while any kind of camping. If it's overnight I'll take nuts, raisins, seaweed, stuff like that. I'd love to have coffee in the morning when on overnight trips but I've never found a good way to make it, no mater how high or low tech the brew me...

HUGE Gila Monster in MSP

I'm not exaggerating - 20 inches long at least. Yesterday (Fri April 5, 2013) in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, on the NORTH side of the Gateway Loop Trail about 100 yards west of the Gateway/Windgate junction at WP1 trail marker... I see a small Western Diamondback rattler on the side of the trail,...

Re: Paleo Diet/ Primal Lifestyle

Perhaps I'm not exactly sure exactly what the "Paleo Diet/Primal Lifestyle" is. Exercise a lot and eat clean, unprocessed food. That seems like a pretty natural concept that humans have followed for a few thousand years until the last century or so. Putting a label on it doesn't change the concept. ...
