Re: Paleo Diet/ Primal Lifestyle

Kind of fun to read about what people eat, I think. I've been all over the map from omnivore to vegan to macro to junk food. SpiderLegs and BobP describe some points that ring true to me. I am my STRONGEST at around 212 lbs. I'm faster at 185, but lose upper body strength. When I was a rock climbing...

You guys that use gallon jugs - Are they the normal "milk jug" plastic things? How do you carry them?

Re: overheating in 110-degree-plus heat

I too wear cotton, at least here in Phoenix. The air is so dry that if the shirt gets wet, it dries really fast and creates a cooling effect. Those nylon/polypro garments might be a better idea if I was in a very humid climate. But here, a wet and evaporating piece of cloth next to my skin seems lik...

Re: Pipeline in McDowell Sonoran Preserve?

Hey thanks! Down in the lower part, near that huge home to the north, I always see a lot of animals, deer, coyote, snakes, birds, lizards... But I don't really see any oasis to suggest water still flows all the way down in the pipe. I guessed it was some old water supply to a "tank" for the cattle. ...

Pipeline in McDowell Sonoran Preserve?

Anybody know any thing about this pipe that I see running from about "Mountain Spring" on the Tom's Thumb Trail at TT13, downhill and parallel to, and sometimes in, the streambed/wash that's generally on the NORTH side of the trail. It CROSSES the Desert Park to Tom's Thumb bypass trail very near th...

So far so good, the swelling is minimal and hoping a bourbon will help.
Seems that getting the bees to drink the bourbon would be the hard part.

Re: leave no trace

@SgtLumpy so you're basically saying that the wilderness only has value because of our appreciation of it? You might be missing the whole point of it. No. I'm saying that leaving an apple core is what I personally consider a less than responsible act. Your views, everyone's views, may vary. Sgt Lum...

Re: leave no trace

" ...Is the wilderness better off because YOU were there? Of course not. You are inherently bad for the wilderness." I think I could argue against that. I (the collective 'we') M/ARE good for the wilderness in the social sense. If we didn't hike, if we didn't encourage/damand/allow trails and trailh...

Re: leave no trace

if someone ever harasses me for chucking an apple core out into the middle of nowhere-- they will quickly be asked about the gas they used to get there, the carbon emissions they have added to that very same environment, the fluids their car is leaking in the parking lot, the very trail they are hi...

Re: leave no trace

As you start up the trail to "Inspirational Viewpoint" in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, there is a large rock that someone has spraypainted with some inspirational saying. I don't care what it says or how "appropriate" some idiot thinks it is, that kind of behavior is disgusting.

LOST: Key Alarm Fob MSP Tom's Thumb

Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve - My girlfriend lost the electronic portion of her key alarm fob (not the keys). She was on horseback Sunday March 10, mid-day. Started out at the Tom's Thumb trailhead at 128th Street south of Rio Verde Rd. Her ride went generally east into the McDowell park via...

Re: state TRUST land?!

Oh for heaven's sake. The permit is $15 bucks per year. That's hardly a "law degree" nor a "stack of land use maps". It costs money for EVERYTHING. Fishermen pay to manage their areas. Golfers pay (a LOT) to manage their areas. Automobile operators pay to manage their areas. I'm personally fine with...

Re: leave no trace

On the apple core arguments: Do those that suggest that leaving apple cores is OK base that on some kind of belief that it's somehow GOOD for the environment? Surely with all of us fit and nature conscious hikers, dropping the core into a trash bag for carry out isn't an athletic challenge. So I'm g...

Re: Trail Etiquette question

I'm late to the party. Pardon me for reviving the thread. I hike AND I ride a horse. Random thoughts... While hiking, I will nearly ALWAYS try and step aside and ACTIVELY NOTIFY bikes, hikers, horses - ahead or behind me that they are clear to pass me. That gives me a chance to be a bit of a "hiking...

I pack out ANYthing I pack in. Apple cores etc. I'll pack out other people's gum wrappers, Starbucks cups, water bottles, plastic bags etc. I'll kick dog poop out of the trail. I draw the line at poopie diapers and used TP. That someone would change their baby or "use the log" and not even attempt t...

I wear Merrell Moab Mid Ventilators. Absolutely love 'um. Can't comment on the KEENs. But I do suggest that whatever you want to try, buy them from Zappo's. Free shipping both ways, simple returns, 365 day satisfaction period etc. Never would have thought that buying shoes online would be a workable...
