Re: National Forest Camping

I'm with Chumley. I've never seen a ranger while camping. The only times I've seen them have been when driving on the forest roads (and they were in their own vehicle).

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

I was in Payson on Thursday, and got into a bit of rain and hail in the afternoon as we were headed back down to the valley. Temps went from 68 degrees to 95 within 20 minutes of driving. that was just insane. Then I was up in Williams and Flagstaff on Friday and Saturday, and was watching the weath...

Re: Reavis

It can get pretty nasty up there. I'm sure this weekends storms were no exception to that. I got caught up there 2 years ago in some bad weather. Winds were 40 to 50 mph...by my best guess. We got tons of rain, sleet and a bit of snow as well. The wind was by far the worst part with the temps in the...

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun

Meanwhile no rain in Williams. Did you end up getting much up there in Williams? The road to Peralta was a muddy mess this morning. Very slick and 4wd a must. The washes were running but not dangerously. By afternoon, the rain had stopped and the road had begun to dry out. By tomorrow, you might ev...

Re: Your ideal hike length?

I agree with Eagle, that it has some factors to depend on. I prefer more challenging hikes (bushwhacking, rock-hoping, climbing...) that are in the area of 7-10 miles total.

Re: Forest Service Wants Us To Be Healthy

On a related note, last weekend ate a non-factory marshmallow made by a confectioner in Lowell, MA. It was dipped in sea salt and caramel, and it was really, really good. Like PhilMW, I'm not a big s'mores fan. The marshmallow is my least favorite part. I'd rather just eat the chocolate and graham ...

Re: West Clear Creek - Bear Canyon to Bull Pen, AZ

Looks like it'd be a fun trip. I'm with Joe on getting out in 3 days, though it'd be a bit rough for sure. You'll definitely want to make sure the weather will be good too. You don't want to be stuck in the canyon if a storm comes through.

Yeah, I went up about 3 weeks ago on a Tuesday. Still saw some people up there, but not too many.

I've done Humphry's and Brown's officially. I have been up Lemon and Baldy for ski trips, so I didn't mark those off...yet.

East Clear Creek video

I went on a backpacking trip this summer at East Clear Creek. We took the Kinder Crossing trail down the canyon, and it's gorgeous down there. I brought some of my camera gear down with me and filmed quite a bit there, so I thought I'd share the video I put together with you guys. https://youtube.co...
