Re: Thru-hiking NOBO

dude.. SOBO. you're looking at temps in the 30's for a HIGH and the lows into the single digits as of this weekend (in flagstaff). 4000-10000 feet is cold. get off the Colorado plateau asap, and down into the deserts. you really won't even get to sonoran desert until the southern mazatzal range, and...

Re: Thru-hiking NOBO

I agree - SOBO if you are in low elevations, sub 3000' and NOT a riparian area, prolly slim pickin's on trees. the kind of trees YOU are prolly used to, that is. if you are in low elevations and you ARE near a stream/creek, there are usually tons of cottonwood, boxelder, willow, sycamore. careful of...

I fell in love with Secret Canyon. it's a fairly short out-and-back hike. but the scenery is great, and not as wet as West Fork.

Re: Aravaipa in late December

get knee-high neoprene socks. usually sold at places that carry duck hunting gear - or diving / scuba socks. there are really good 2mm neoprene compression socks sold for less than $25. last time I hiked there, a few areas were waist deep pools, but can be avoided with some out of creek scrambling.

Re: Late December backpacking for an out-of-stater

Do you think this area will be well travelled nope. it's not ever "well traveled". the trails out here are mostly clear, a few brushy spots here and there, and some cairns will guide you in tough areas. if you have hiked on narrow (1' wide) trails before, and have a good set of maps (the beartooth ...

Re: Late December backpacking for an out-of-stater

the Supes have Loops! lots and lots of loops.. you could stay busy for weeks there. a nice 4 day trip would be: drive out of east phoenix (the airport) and take the I 10 to the us60. go east out of town until you pass superior, about 30 miles east of mesa. stop and get an eyeful of what a struggling...

i was always interested in the signage there, something along the lines of "drink at your own risk". uranium or radioactivity contamination? i don't recall. must have been the water i drank from there..

since you live in suprise, lynx lake is a great call. but the real "gem" of that area is below the dam. make sure to hit that area when you go.

Re: Reavis Ranch Info

I've often thought that Teva's first backpack trip should be into Reavis and Circlestone. Waddya say, Joe? iirc, Joe's first backpack was into peterson ranch (also apples) back in the day. man, it's been years! i never really thought he'd start out with a 1.5 lb tarptent and a 15° marmot down bag b...

Re: Lightning safety when hiking

go indoors and wait 30 minutes from the last strike. Puts a huge crunch on an airport when that happens!! on most of my jobsites, the GC will shut a job down when lightning is reported within 10 mile range of the building (even after lightning protection has been installed on the structure). last y...

Re: Lightning safety when hiking

I find it interesting that people think cars are safe lightning can easily blow out rubber tires. they are not a very reliable source of insulation for a strike of a Billion volts trying to get to ground. however, this is far better than standing under a tree. i guess thanks to todd, i will now hav...
