Re: Lightning safety when hiking

I find it interesting that people think cars are safe lightning can easily blow out rubber tires. they are not a very reliable source of insulation for a strike of a Billion volts trying to get to ground. however, this is far better than standing under a tree. i guess thanks to todd, i will now hav...

Jim, you must be thinking of the "ring of fire" which originates from Tinder, but soon turns raging inferno.

10' off the ground, ~4' away from the tree trunk. i usually hang my food and such about 100 away from camp. not just for bears, our state mammal, the ringtail cat... is a determined little bugger. mice, too. also, a good cord that will support the mass of your bag but will not cut into the tree is d...

Re: Challenging Hike Suggestions

Mazzie peak is tough because the climb up shake tree (y bar) is steady, but fairly constant. and the bushwhacking to reach the peak along the ridge is gnarly towards the top. we did a clockwise loop including a nice, rocky canyon with some avoidable dry-falls using the barnhardt trail as the return ...

Re: Favorite Water Treatment?

just an observation: when i purchased my Squeeze from a box store last year, the average retail from most sellers was $23.
maybe due to popularity, the average price a year later is $40.
i cannot imagine the Squeeze with couple of crappy little bladders is 40 bucks worth of filter. price gouging?

yeah, there's sexier hats out there. but they're $45
i think i'll let this hot CoverSquirrel body speak for itself.. she won't even notice the hat.

got 1 for each glove box, just in case. besides, in "cowboy mode" the hat holds a taco on each side. winning!

Re: Lime Creek 51 Ranch - Horseshoe

so you want to stay at the cabin, then go back out? that's 12 mi r/t right? or do you plan to go six miles, set up camp and then dayhike up to 14 on TOP of the six? or would you rather hike 13 miles, camp, then return? i'd like to hear what you end up doing. either way, you have to hike (up to) 26 m...

odd - being that they are the only Hobie dealer in town, and they sell mostly fishing kayaks.. but still. i just ran into him at saguaro on monday. i did find it funny he was using his fishing 'yak as a SUP, with a tiny, 36" long oar!! lol he looked like a paddling Hobbit.
