Re: Summer HAZFest 2017

buy a new cooler my old coleman extreme is decent. of course, it does not have a "bear proof" claim. they are priced low tho, not insane like Yeti. coleman x-treme beat Magellan and Ozark for temp control in a few tests i've seen. there's a bunch out there. Rtic, Gatorbox, etc.. https://www.youtube...

Re: Bought a new pack, Deuter ACT Lite 60+10 SL

my second pack was an Act lite 40 + 10

felt much better to carry than the arc'teryx bora 65 that it replaced. it was half the weight, for starters.

decent packs. at par with osprey, imho, and much less $$.

Re: Flash Flood Fatalities Near Payson

"Streamside Trails by Steve Krause (1994) lists a Waterfall and Swimming Hole Hike on page 24 and 25 and list Ellison Creek as moderate 1 mile walk down to a 40' cascading waterfall." - nighthiker according to the latest printing* of above mentioned book, on page 93 it is indeed labeled "ellison cre...

Re: Flash Flood Fatalities Near Payson

man. this is horrible. i was just at wcc today, and as i saw the clouds rolling in @ the upper reaches of wcc, i told my hiking partner we need to be cautious. we left at around 2:10 pm. looking at the doppler on her phone, it was clear the huge storm system rolled right across the upper reaches of ...

Re: Damaged bu repairable Gear - Free

just throwing this out there, regarding tent zippers. there are places in the valley that will repair for a small fee. i believe REI "used to" do it.. but maybe hiking shack still does.

Re: First Time Hiking AZT

in response to your last question: i do not know your pace, or your tenacity. i will tell you what i did, as a veteran backpacker who can push myself when im hiking alone... (remember, this is going from marshall lake to pine, southbound) first day, started at the observatory at 10:30 am. hiked ~24....

Re: Humphrey's Peak Backpack via Inner Basin Trail

the only reason i have never hiked this route, and camped at the saddle, is the lack of water along the route to Humphreys.
it's kinda odd, to me, now that i think of it.. Humphreys is maybe the only peak i can think of that does not have a reliable spring somewhere along it's trails. huh.

Re: lost backpack near Calloway Trail along West Clear Creek

i was there last weekend, however only from Maxwell to about Tramway. I did see a younger man, around 25 maybe, hiking in the canyon. he said he came down calloway. he had a digital camo/army style pack, and blue jeans. maybe he saw it, and maybe he left it there. or maybe, he's about to reply to th...

Re: First Time Hiking AZT

i did marshall lake to pine. water was flowing at double springs, navajo spring (qt per min) and i filled up at Maxie tank. along the trail, more water at bargaman park, and after that, it was rough. i opted to avoid the climb over the mesa just east of gonzales tank (looked like it was pointless) a...

mazzys or mazzies?

people who say or type "sups" are usually the same set that type "your" as in "you're doing it wrong".

Where at Ft. McDowell, the Chevron at the last light on the Beeline right across the street from said gas station at the last light, Southeast side of the building.. 8 am. it's a short hike so we don't need to be there super early. a 2 hour drive from mesa, 1.5 from ft mcdowell.. i have a faded red...

it would be cool to see some hazzer's there. if not, the views are good enough alone. ;)

View the Sierra Ancha canyons

fairly easy/moderate backpack into the heart of Sierra Ancha, walking thru a shallow canyon (Reynolds Creek) on a generally scenic trail(s) to a small spring among pines with good, nay... Great views into the canyons leading into the Cherry Creek drainage below. we'll meet in ft. mcdowell and drive ...

Re: Hells Hole #284 or Reynolds Creek #150

that reminds me, yours truly wrote the hike description for Hell's Hole trail. i can only hope it has served its purpose and guided those into that area with clear directions. however, hiking along the Reynold's Creek trail is easier, more scenic towards the end, (go in late summer, there are wild b...
