Re: Bad Directions to Horseshoe Mesa - Backpacker Magazine

It sounds as if Andrew Brunelli died trying to do the same loop that Margaret Bradley died doing in July 2004. Some people just don't understand mileage or heat in the Grand Canyon. I've done that 27 mile loop in 2 days, but in December. It would be a suicide attempt to try it in the summer. Every s...

Amazon.com also has the Garmin 60csx (new not refurb) for $200 right now, not sure how long their deal will last though.

Re: Bad Directions to Horseshoe Mesa - Backpacker Magazine

It is about someone who is not calibrated to desert hiking who may read the article and follow the trip description. The same goes for anyone that reads any trail description posted on the internet or in an article. To include the thousands that are on this very website. Maybe you can dig through e...

Re: Bad Directions to Horseshoe Mesa - Backpacker Magazine

I think your taking it a bit overboard trying to hold a magazine liable for a persons death on a hike. I don't care if it was bad info or not. I would never take a magazine article use it as my sole guidance for a hike, that's what maps and research are for. Personally I think 1 gallon is fine for t...

Re: Bad Directions to Horseshoe Mesa - Backpacker Magazine

I was more concerned when I went to BP online looking for this article and read their description for the Tanner-Beamer-Little Colorado and back hike as a 3 day hike, then mentioning 4 days in the article. There were recommending to go from Tanner TH all the way to Pallisades Day 1, out to the LC an...

Re: Four Peaks Mother Lode (10/24)

Great information, I'm sure I can do this one. I am not familiar with the area, and want to make this hike with hikers who know it. You may be in for a rude awakening if you think this is a "hike". I really have to agree with Tough Boots on this one, do Browns Peak first before even considering the...

Re: General Canyon Questions

You pass Roaring Springs on the way up the N.K. trail. That is a good spot to stop along the ways for a snack/lunch. I doubt you would want to return to it the next day just to see it again though. I'm not familiar with the N. Rim trails to suggest something else though.

Re: White Tank Mountain High Point?

You can't tell it's higher until you get up there. Here is my route to the radio towers : http://www.hikearizona.com/location_g.p ... 112.578947 you could take the road over to them or just off trail it by staying on goat camp trail a little further and then cut over to it.

Re: What Do You Wear On Your Feet?

I swear by trailrunners/ light hiking shoes. I get blisters every time I wear boots. I've had good luck with New Balance trail runners, Vasque and now a pair of North Face. Your feet will thank you for having something light and comfortable on it. When I try to wear boots my feet feel heavy and I en...

Re: 100 miles in june

An out and back on the High Sierra Trail, runs from Sequoia NP to Mt. Whitney. Would be more like 110 miles I think. But if they went to Yosemite last year they may want to go elsewhere.

Edit: Not sure how the snow levels are at this year, there may be some passes that would be tough.

Re: Anyone want to go to St. Maarten in May?

Mike, we went to Antigua one year but that was it. Have gone to St. Maarten the last 5 years, it's by far our favorite island. Chumley, yes it's pretty funny to see people get blasted on take-off. You can quickly tell that it was a bad idea once the sand starts blowing, they usually end up going for...

Re: Anyone want to go to St. Maarten in May?

The airport is right on the water, that's how they all land. There is a beach bar where the photo was taken from, they list all the planes landing that day and have the tower over some speakers so you know when one is coming in. Pretty cool standing on a beach and having a 747 land 40' on top of you.

Anyone want to go to St. Maarten in May?

We won't be able to use our timeshare this year in St. Maarten. If anyone would like to go there I will give you a great deal on it. It's the week of May 8th to the 15th. I listed it on Ebay - Click for link - It's a weeks stay at the cost of a weekend getaway. Were in Italy so it's a bit hard to ge...
