Re: Southern AZ trash

After posting I forgot you just did the AZT last year, I'm sure you saw first hand how bad it is there.

If you think Babo is bad you should see around Miller Peak.

Re: bivy recommendations

I had the Black Diamond Lighsabre one Redroxx mentioned, only used it on 1 trip but I found it too small for me. When I inflated my big agnes air mattress my legs had no room at all in the thing and where squished in there. Glad to hear the one that Big Agnes makes is larger.

Yes, in Vegas for a few weeks so getting to do a little hiking. 6 hour drive to the GC canyon from here though, I did consider it.

That's a great sleeping bag for the price. I have the 5 degree Kilo Plus and got it on sale as well, wouldn't think twice about getting another one again.

Re: which way

If I had my way up and down kaibab, BA just takes to long. If you really want the loop down SK up BA. Moonlight = SK Water or heat= BA Parking = BA, or 1/2 mile from the TH on the main road for SK, none at the TH except maybe in winter, I forget their rules. In the end, any trip to the canyon is bet...

Re: New Tech Toys at CES 2010

I'm still waiting for the GPS, Phone, P&S Camera, it may be a possibility with HTC Touch Cruise. Camera- yes, Phone-Yes, GPS- Well it looks like it's road navigation only. Just let it function like a garmin and throw in whatever sat phone, text message capability that is out there into it and it's a...

Re: Reavis Ranch (108 n?) (109 s?)

Ive gone to the North TH in a Honda Civic, you should be able to make it in the Echo. You have no chance of making it to the S. TH. Follow the directions and it takes you to the parking lot / TH. Like any TH don't leave anything valuable in the car and nothing at all in sight is even better.

Re: The process of switching to Ultralight...

I have the Golite Jam 2, It may be ok for an overnight. But if your wanting an actual hipbelt with functional suspension system I would go with the Granite Gear or Osprey. If I didn't get a killer deal on my Gregory Z55 pack I would have gotten the Osprey. I loved my first Gregory Z pack, used and a...

Re: Advanced V. Extreme

I don't know, I was fearless when it came to climbing as a kid. Did a lot more things than I should have, where today I wouldn't even consider it sans rope. As far as the topic goes I don't really think it matters. What is advanced for one person is a walk in the park for another.

Re: Dogs on the trail... sans leash...

I must say I love being in Europe. They may have leash laws, but 90% of the dogs are just walking next to their owner sans leash. Nobody complaining about it either. I'm not just talking out in the woods I mean through the streets of Venice, Vienna, Prague you name it. Just dogs being free and more ...

Re: Help planning 3 nights at Grand Canyon - Dec/Jan

Yes it can be mighty cold down there. I did the Escalante route one year and I don't know if we had a day above 40°, nights in the teens. Frozen everything in the morning as well as frozen bladders on the hike out. Add the fact that your camping in a side canyon 90% of the time and it may only get s...

Re: Tarptent

I failed my 1st attempt to set-up the contrail. Camping in Sequia NP before starting a 5 day 75 mile trip, couldn't get the stakes to go in the ground and the campground and it kept falling over on me. So it went in the truck and I took my Black Diamond Lighthouse tent (still my favorite tent). Afte...

Re: Phoenix 7 summits challenge

I ended up doing it last year on Super Bowl Saturday with a friend. Not really anything you need to do with the group unless you just want more people around. Also the city of Phoenix "stole" the event from the original creator, so I boycotted the event for that reason as well. If you interested in ...

Re: Help planning 3 nights at Grand Canyon - Dec/Jan

You can never go wrong with Kurt's (hikeaz) advice. Tanner to the LC and back is not anything I would want to do in 4 days, especially not in winter with short days and cold mornings. Another option I might add would be the Grandview - Tonto - S. Kaibab Loop. It's a little more remote than the Hermi...

Been to the mine 3 or 4 times, never seen a person there. Last time I was there it was rather easy to get around the gate but that's been a few years now.
