Re: Snow???

I didn't see it, but a reliable source (FS Fire Lookout) told me the San Francisco Peaks got a dusting of snow yesterday morning (9/23).

Re: North Rim Fires

I believe I've strayed from the thread, but I assume it was a local event, here's my source: http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php?wfo=psr you need to select State Summary >> Arizona >> Archived/September 23rd. I also see that the streamflow for the East Verde spiked up 5 feet overnight, with flo...

Re: Beeline Hwy or Hwy 87

I drove up Friday 9/28. Left Tempe at about 2pm. There were a couple of sections of single-lane restriction between Ft. McDowell and the 4-Peaks road, but no traffic back-up at all. Slower traffic in the construction areas caused the trip to be about 10 minutes longer than normal. (The Sunday return...

Re: North Rim Fires

NWS reports .35" and .67" at the North Rim for Saturday and Sunday. Nice to see an inch of rain at the end of September. Happy birthday and enjoy the trip! --- Also, Payson (airport) got hammered with 3.96". I got to see a nice flash flood on North Sycamore Creek running into the East Verde near the...

Re: Rabbits in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve

it causes the rabbits to become gigantic meat-eaters. When several people are slaughtered by the carnivorous carrot-munchers, Roy and Gerry attempt to find a solution before the whole of the American Southwest is overrun by giant rabbits I need to find that movie ... Re: Snow???

I for one, can't wait! Last night had Freeze Warnings issued for the North Rim and Flagstaff areas, with 30 at Flag, and mid-to-upper 20s elsewhere above 7K. (Columbine was only down to 44 last night). I slept with the windows open in Tempe for the first time in months (79 at 10pm, 65 at dawn) ... a...

Re: Beeline Hwy or Hwy 87

It's been 3 weekends since the lane restriction started.

Any reports from the past two weekends on how the traffic flow is going?

(I'm heading up Friday, and haven't decided when to leave yet). thx.

Re: fall colors backpacking

My best recommendation: Look at some HAZ photosets for hikes you are interested in doing. Find photos in the date range you are going and see how the colors look. I believe that the 2nd week in October is usually a week past the peak color for Aspens at the higher elevations such as Kachina Peaks. I...

Hiker dies on 8-mile hike in east Mesa

Another sad story.

While the article doesn't indicate the cause, I suspect heatstroke is a possibility.

The hiker had just moved here from North Dakota.

Re: Salt River Camping Trip

The area you're talking about falls entirely within the Mesa Ranger District of the Tonto National Forest. I haven't ever set up camp that close to town, but there are numerous recreation sites and campgrounds near the river. Virtually all of them require the purchase of the Tonto Pass. A map of the...

Re: Salt River Camping Trip

You'll have to be a bit more specific as the Salt River is more than a couple of miles long.

Lower Salt? Along/between any of the 4 lakes? Upstream of Lake Roosevelt?

Rattlesnake Quiet Area

I found an explanation of the Rattlesnake Quiet Area that I thought might make a helpful addition to the Old Munds Highway trail description.

No photos? :( Joe will have to add Otter to the Fauna directory... Seriously, I had no idea that there were otters anywhere in AZ. But a quick search brought this interesting info. Wonderfully adapted to an aquatic existence, the otter’s elongated body terminates in a streamlined tail that tapers fr...

Re: Please Boycott Phoenix Summit Challenge

Link works fine for me. Sad story. Phx should realize that an event like this, like the PFChangs Marathon will ultimately benefit the city if they just structure the contract correctly (and mostly stay out of the way). I'm sure that it can be an actual revenue-producer for maintenance and upkeep of ...

Re: Beeline Hwy or Hwy 87

I was just thinking ... it would be helpful if people who drive this way over the next few months post how the trip goes, what day/time you traveled and what the conditions were. I also wonder if there will be many delays if accessing the Beeline from the Bush Hwy (a little congestion at the interch...

Re: Beeline Hwy or Hwy 87

EVT reports It’s going to get a lot more stressful to take that relaxing weekend trip to Payson or the White Mountains. A construction project will narrow the northbound Beeline Highway to a single lane for 10-12 months, even on weekends. Drivers got their first taste of the project Friday, when del...

That first episode of Survivorman in the Sonoran Desert actually listed the GPS Coordinates briefly on screen at the beginning. Since I don't have Tivo  I was never able to go back and determine his exact location. However I'm pretty sure he was in an area within 20 miles of Young. If anybody g...
