Re: 2018- Fee-free days diminishing at National Parks/Monuments

I contacted TNF and received a reply... "There should be a news release coming out about the dates in the next couple of days which you can find on the Tonto National Forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/tonto. The dates will be January 15 - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; February 19 - President's Day ;...

2018- Fee-free days diminishing at National Parks/Monuments

After waiving fees for 16 days in 2016 and 10 days in 2017, the National Park Service announced it will have just four no-cost days in 2018. They will be Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 15), the first day of National Park Week (April 21), National Public Lands Day (Sept. 22) and Veterans Day (Nov. ...

Re: Won the Wave Permit! Please help!!!

Concur about the Buckskin - a do-not-miss highlight. Having spent quite a bit of time out by 'The Wave' I would suggest merely exploring that whole area. Although 'The Wave' gets all the attention, the whole Coyote Buttes North area is awesome and worthwhile in its own right. The teepees area is coo...

I was thinking more "Baby boomers complaining about minuscule amounts of money and other things they don't like about the world they created".
That's a good one too! Although it kinda seems 'complainy' in its own right. :)

Re: Tonto Pass required for Cave Creek TH ??

The FS has a long-standing habit of thumbing their nose at laws they disagree with. Even since they have lost multiple lawsuits (at what cost to the taxpayer?) they continue to extort $ from those using non-conforming parking areas/trail-heads. Of special note is the group of tyrants who were runnin...

Re: Tonto Pass required for Cave Creek TH ??

The Tonto National Forest website lists Cave Creek Trailhead as a picnic area subject to the Tonto Pass requirement. I’ve seen some arguments saying that hikers who simply park and do not utilize any of the amenities (trash cans, bathrooms, etc.) are not subject to the pass requirement. But I would...

Hualapai Zipline

Not really GC, so mods can move if apropos... PEACH SPRINGS, Ariz. — The Hualapai Tribe is expanding tourist offerings at the west rim of the Grand Canyon. More than 1 million people a year visit Grand Canyon West, outside the boundaries of the national park. It’s best known for the Skywalk, a horse...

33 29.048 x 111 3.132 is 16,878.4 yards or 9.59 miles from the junction of Fish Creek & Frog Tanks if you slap a 1 in front of 3.132 for 33° 29.048, -111° 13.132 puts you 264 yards SSW of Fish Creek on Frog Tanks Thanks Joe. Re: Forest Road 172 & 172A to Rogers Trough TH

@hikeaz Ok thanks! So, even if we did still decide to camp at A.B. We could do a day hike and hike to fish creek for that evening/morning water? Bring it back to A.B.....? Or I guess it may be easier just to camp at the spot you mentioned..........is it obvious? Can I get a way point? The camp spot...

Re: Forest Road 172 & 172A to Rogers Trough TH

.............do you think there will be water in some of the springs by now? Even though the area just received about 1/2" of rain Sat./Sun. and should leave some pools in Roger's Creek, I have always found water shortly down Fish Creek from the Frog Tanks trail. I would estimate it to be about 2 e...

Re: Packrafting trips in January

@hikeaz Packrafting isn't allowed in GCNP when there is a reasonable overland trail/route to use. For example, a buddy put in for a permit to hike out to Clear Creek, then packraft back to Bright Angel. He wasn't allowed the packrafting part, so we had to hike both out and back. That's grim.....and...

Re: Packrafting trips in January

I believe that short-trip packrafting on the Colorado in the GCNP can be done with merely a backcountry (backpacking) permit - I believe that the limit is/was 5? (river) miles- mix-an-match of mile(s) is OK. Sure would be a preferable way to get back to Tanner or Palisades after hiking out to the L....

Re: Ideas for backpack December - Jan; GC loop recommendation

...... Hikeaz, I like your idea on Tanner-S Kaibab and the tip on the sun. Maybe it is the map I'm looking at, but I'm not seeing any way to shorten the trip from Tanner then going westbound on Tonto --it looks like the only way out is Yaki point, which I think is a haul--29 miles. .....-Do I have ...
