Re: Reavis Ranch Alternative?

@rickcmarsh "Scale cliffy areas" sounds worse than it is: a well maintained and used trail. Last I went was... October? There was a large boy scout group of 8ish 12 year boys. At that time there were no water crossings as the creek bed was dry. Considering it's been a dry winter, my guess...

Unread post by nonot » Feb 21 2022 10:38 pm Your planned group size exceeds the wilderness group limit. Good point on the group size limit; had forgotten about that. To both our points on March being twilight zone weather wise, it's a bit hard to come up with a non-wilderness trip that could accomm...

Re: Reavis Ranch Alternative?

@rickcmarsh What have you been looking at that's turned you off? This state is ridiculous with public lands/wilderness areas/routes for backpacking. So, you were considering the Supes in the first week of March: there's still a whole bunch for consideration and have a lot of spots suitable for a la...

Re: Chiricahuas and Smugglers

@PatrickL Gotta love the comparison to an active invasion with bombings in Ukraine to... migrants looking for jobs in the states? Parents trying to send their kids to relatives in the states for a better life? Yes, illegal but.... a bit different. (note, he also said "potential invasion" ...

Re: FS 211 - Reavis Trailhead - North

@rickcmarsh It's fine to drive but you'll want to note that you can't get all the way to the trailhead that way either; they have the road closed at the marina to regular passenger vehicles. You can park there and hike up the road or hike up the wash there to the trailhead , it'll just add some dis...

Re: Road Access to Trailheads along Mogollon Rim

@rickcmarsh
There are plenty of places to camp along that trail; it's very popular. Are you just saying that for some logistical/other reason you wanted to camp right at the trailhead?

Re: FR 172 & 172A to Rogers Trough TH

I went up to the Woodbury trailhead yesterday and came back down tonight (quick overnight backpacking trip). Agree with the above that the road is in pretty good shape as far as these things go up to the old farm as mentioned. There are some bigger rocks but nothing a normal SUV/truck should have an...

Re: Chiricahuas and Smugglers

Basically, ask yourself this: do you go to Circle K sometimes when that QT is just a little too far away? If the answer is yes, then you've already put yourself in more danger

Re: Chiricahuas and Smugglers

You might encounter someone but it's not super common and to RedRoxx44's point, they're generally not looking to cause any problems. They have a "job" to do and screwing with random hikers is just not going to be good for their business. I ran across a couple of guys that were likely drug ...

Dogie Trail/Sycamore Creek water recently

Anyone been on Dogie trail where it crosses Sycamore recently? I saw a youtube video from two months that made it look dry as a bone but we had that one bit of rain earlier in January and then some snow farther north so I'm wondering if anyone has been in that area and seen water in the creek. Wanti...

@chumley They did not, perhaps unsurprisingly, receive funding (although I could see why maybe some people wouldn't want to even have those out there I suppose but you could always use forwarding if you're THAT concerned) @rcorfman No specific app is needed on iPhone/Android for a while now; you ju...

Re: Get your lost gear back

@nonot I was pitched something similar by an entrepreneur a while ago and asked the same question. Their response was something along the lines of, "That's exactly why this is needed! You can keep your personal info [phone, email, addy, whatever] out of the hands of potential strangers!" ...

Re: Smartwatch recommendations?

So I do want to point out that the Fenix 5 is 5 years old now. The complaints listed above are valid for that particular version. I have the 6 and the battery life exceeds advertised and has higher GPS accuracy than the Suunto devices. The Coros Vertix 2 is a newer device and has better GPS accuracy...

Re: See which 10 national parks had the most search and rescues in recent years

@big_load No, no shuttles/bus there and while it's busy, even during holidays I haven't been turned away in my many visits, at least. Very different story with Zion and Bryce, though. With that said, this upcoming year starting in March, there does look to be a new system where you have to reserve ...

Re: See which 10 national parks had the most search and rescues in recent years

@big_load Is Arches busses? Been there multiple times in the last couple of years and that wasn't a thing. Are you thinking Zion maybe? For Arches, I can see it even though it doesn't make a ton of sense on the surface. One hike I had that was enlightening was about two years ago, a couple of days ...

Re: Smartwatch recommendations?

The Coros is an excellent watch and stands toe-to-toe with the Fenix 6 in most ways, surpasses it on accuracy, but falls short on some areas (that may not matter to everyone, like Spotify compatibility). I'm incredibly glad it exists. I may be biased in my own weird way but I worked on one of the em...

Re: See which 10 national parks had the most search and rescues in recent years

It's also just an insanely popular park that also has popular trails that are incredibly difficult for the average tourist. 4k+ elevation change ain't no joke for most people. I suspect that a lot of people just see trails that are popular like bright angel and figure if it's open, it's probably som...

Re: Smartwatch recommendations?

Agree with Pivo; what are your main use cases? I had the forerunner series for years when running was the only thing I cared about and loved it. Switched to a Fenix when I took up backpacking and hiking again as I like some of the features it has for that. When I travel (well, used to...) for work a...
