The 2019!! Cyclical totals discussion thread.

Post by Jim_H » Mar 24 2009 1:52 pm

How are things progressing this year? In keeping with the idea that you are only as good as the numbers you post, I'm up to 61,436' of elevation for the year and a modest 132 miles.
Added August 2019: Looking back 10 years later, I honestly can't think of anything more offensive or unhealthy to say about one's hiking, than the above statement. Thats was my OP in 2009. Hiking should never just be about the stats recorded.

My spring was terrible for hiking. I am hoping summer is a good one. Well, the fist half of Spring.

I didn't pay attention to the year's half way point on June 30, and it has come and gone. If the first 6 months of the year are any indicator, I won't be likely to get much beyond the middle 100s this year, maybe 160,000'. Which would be my worst year for AEG, and by extension of my lack of hiking, miles, too. I'm not doing longer training hikes, and I'm not really that upset. I would have liked it if I had a better spring with more interesting hikes, but what can you do.

Still, what troubles me, is my miles. Now, I'm not just complaining that I am not getting stats, as I am not that concerned anymore. However, I am concerned that without frequent hikes with longer miles, even 10 miles is getting tough. Recently, I started to feel like I am having muscle pulls in my upper legs while out on longer one, and I feel a lot sorer a day or two later, in a way I never really did before. Happened in Zion, and last week on Wrightson. I'm actually just fine on AEG, and didn't have issues doing 4000 feet last week, so that is nice. I'm hoping some of this may be heat related. Though, the pulling sensation does tend to occur when going uphill, so it may be related to both. Always in the heat, though.

It's hard to get miles, I think, down here in this heat. At least I have some trips planned, so I can get out and enjoy some longer hikes.

I agree. I found some untapped capacity once I decided to test the hypothesis that my encroaching limitations weren't age-related. Whatever age takes from me won't be gotten without a fight.

To the topic, I haven't logged anything for quite a while, but I've had plenty of good adventures. I owe a triplog and photoset to PLC92084, who graciously bequeathed me Grand Gulch permits this spring.

I just looked at my stats for the first time in a few months. I think I'm running a little short of last year. But probably within 10% or so of my past couple of years which have been fairly consistent. Same for AEG. :)

Adding hiking partners has been slow lately. I should work on that stat. I prefer people over miles anyway.

I did see it says I'm 44, which I don't think I had really thought of before. I don't feel like I'm 44! [-(

A quick glance at the self-momentum page shows that the #1 mileage spot is pretty secure.
2-3-4 are up for grabs with 3 days to go though.
5-10 are probably set.

In AEG the top 15 spots are looking pretty secure, though there are a couple of people who might move up a spot if they manage 4,000+ foot hikes before Monday.

The peak-bagging trophy is set, but there's some room for movement down the list for those who put specific effort in to it.

The top 3 uniques are set, but 4-8 could change depending on what gets hiked over the weekend.

This assumes that everybody is up-to-date on posting. If somebody posts a bunch of hikes they did months ago, it could cause some significant changes.
These kinds of holdouts are what truly competitive people do to assure their victory in these important statistical achievements of self-worth in order to prevent others from stealing their crown.

Congratulations to all on a year of hiking prowess.

I was really only competing with myself this year. Me, me ME! I was successful in doing what I wanted, hopefully with a bit more in me for enjoyment before NYE. My current month, the last 7 months, and my year's AEG have all been satisfactory. My 2,800,000' of AEG and 7,590 miles since joining, are things which please me, too. Next year, yes I would like to cross 3 million feet of AEG, but mostly I want to continue to stay in shape and hike fun stuff with a decent amount of frequency, out of town. Me, pleasing me.

My mileage is about equal to last years. Cut down on hiking and/or running on high pollution days after my first appointment with an allergist who read me the riot act about working out on those days. But the upshot is that since I've paid attention to days with high pollution I've only been sick once in the past 6 months. Unlike year's past where it wasn't uncommon to fight a sinus infection for up to a month after a long excursion around Phoenix.

Alright, my coffee hasn't kicked in apparently, I've found my stats on my profile. Where do I find the big stats for the whole group?

Yep, right now I have the top mileage, but it's with the knowledge that that's only because you haven't logged a few miles along the PCT :app:.

I was the first poster of the year, early in the morning. I walked 3 miles before work. So, I got to be numero uno for a little while, until someone else posted! :D
