It's a great area. Criminally underrated. But I'm kind of glad. There are tons of trails out there but also tons of off-trail opportunities. In the last two years, I've probably spent the most time out there of most on HAZ other than @Barrett.climbrock5 wrote:Quick Question- Besides the big jim trail etc. is there any other remote hikes out in the Hieroglyphic mountains? My only concern is that from driving castle hot springs road there appears to be a significant amount of private property? I'm only guessing but I'd assume most of these people own firearms and don't take kindly to people on their property. I'm totally open to exploring this area.
Also another totally random question but while hiking do I need to be at all concerned with the burros? I've seen mountain lions, deer, rattlesnakes, but never ran into a burro on the trail. In all of the states I've lived this is the only animal I haven't really encountered.
Definitely nothing to worry about. In my experience there's a big chance that the burros will not run away, but instead group together and stare at you as you walk by. They're a fun animal to watch, especially when they have the little ones with them. I once placed a geocache along the Black Canyon Trail a bit south of the Henderson Trailhead. There were burros nearby and by the time I was finished, there was a group of a dozen or so about 30 yards off watching me.SpiderLegs wrote:The burros will run away from you once they catch a glimpse of you.
