REI Mountain House Fail

Post by rcorfman »

I was going to grab a few Mountain House pro-pack sized meals while I was at REI today. They no longer carry Rice and Chicken nor Spaghetti in that size. That's two of the four flavors I'll eat. Well I wasn't going to buy 5 each of the other two to get the 10% discount. What the heck is REI thinking?

@rcorfman
REI still lists both on their website so you can probably buy them online and pick up at store if you don't want to have them shipped to you.

Keep an eye on Walmart MH. I think they are sold at a different size than the ones at REI. 2 servings vs 3 or 1.5 servings vs 2.5 servings, etc.

Not a big deal, except if you are used to eating a certain amount and then realize that you now have more/less than what you normally do!

Dehydrate your own food. That way you can get exactly what you want in the amounts you want it. I haven't eaten Mountain House in over 10 years.

You may want to try this......
I buy the #10 cans of freeze dried meat (chicken, ham, beef, etc.) (My personal favorite > http://beprepared.com/provident-pantry- ... 29-oz.html) and merely mix a handful with one of the various Lipton/Knorr sides.http://www.knorr.com/product/category/245726/sides Just as many calories as a MH meal and much cheaper.

I recently saw dehydrated peanut butter at Fry's - thought what a great thing for backpacking!

or, at least try Mary Jane's Farm, Enertia trail foods (owned by coleman) or other (better) alternatives?
and Kurt nailed it.. i have a quick beef stroganoff recipe that is great! you'll need to source dried sour cream powder, or in winter months, get the wet stuff free at wendy's.

I've heard good enough things about Mary Jane's Farm that I'd try them. It would be hard to beat my own cooking, though. :D

The add-water types I have tried seem to turn out dry and gritty. If oil is added the results improve dramatically - but brings the 'carry weight' back up to real PB.

I'm a big fan of those Justin's Nut Butter packets, especially the almond butter. It's not as light as dehydrated, but it's convenient and delicious.

Sportsmans has them cheaper than REI, Big 5, or Bass Pro. A little more than Walmart, but if you don't want to step in Walmart....
