Anyone been by Mormon Lake recently?

I'll be in Flag today to get my touring kayak rudder system fixed. I'm wondering about a lake to take the boat. I probably don't want to go to Lake Mary. Been there, done that. Is Mormon Lake just a mudflat now? How about Ashurst Lake, is it big enough for me to get some exercise?

The lakes around Williams are looking pretty sad right now, especially Kaibab, which is very low and muddy. I also saw Dogtown and White Horse recently--not quite as bad, but also very murky. They are all very small. White Horse is the biggest of the three.

I don't want to drive a long distance from Flag. I just want to take the boat for a short spin (about 5 miles or so of paddling) after getting the rudder system fixed. I may end up at Lake Mary after all...

Heres a great resource updated weekly

Looks like Ashurst is so low they are not allowing boat launches currently.

I'm sure that Mormon lake is not currently boatable. It's not even mentioned in the report!

Thank you for the info and link!! I think I'll end up at Upper Lake Mary. At least it will be navigable for a kayaker.

Mormon Lake was shrunken and muddy when I drove by last week. I'd say stick to Lake Mary.

Thanks, I'm glad I didn't drive down that far! I did go to Upper Lake Mary. It sure would be nice to see Lower Lake Mary looking like a lake. It looks like a creek.

I'll be over at Blue Ridge Reservoir (C.C. Cragin) next week, so I'll be able to see Mormon Mudhole and also check out Blue Ridge. So far all the lakes I've visted have looked very muddy. (Kaibab, Dogtown, White Horse and Upper Lake Mary.) I am not sure why this is.

I grew up in Flagstaff and can never remember Lake Mary looking anything other than murky. In the years when the lower lake would fill it was a pretty site!

Murky, yes. But brown muddy? Did it look actually muddy? Most AZ lakes are not very clear (except Lake Mead) but I have never seen so many muddy lakes as around here. I had paddled in Lake Mary 2 years ago, I don't remember it being muddy-looking.

I always remember Lake Mary being just like your photos. Even "floaties" when you look into the water from the boat. Hard to believe Flag gets (or used to get anyways) a lot of their drinking water from there, and it was always clear and very tasty!

Mormon Lake was close to non-existent last summer. I wonder if it has much water in it now. Has anyone been by there in the past several weeks? I suppose I could take the kayak and go see, and then backtrack to Lake Mary if no water in Mormon.

I drove by on the highway early last Saturday morning, there was standing water in the NE corner. Didn't look like prime kayak conditions tho, no real shoreline, just water in the weeds.

It'll probably be nice for sledding though. ;)
