Reavis Ranch Fri-Sat

Trip 2/12/10-2/13/10. I'm planning to go to Reavis Ranch Friday afternoon (hopefully leaving the trail head by 1:00PM) and spend the night. Saturday, coming back via Reavis saddle, Rogers Canyon, Frog Tanks and back on the Reavis Ranch trail. I haven't mapped the whole mileage but it looks like a lot more than the Ranch in-out hike. Most of the mileage will be on Saturday. I plan on being back by Saturday evening.

O.K. finished mapping it. The planned hike is way too long at 38+mi. I decided to cut it to a more manageable 31.7. What I did was cut off trail up a canyon to connect from Reavis Ranch trail south of the camp (south of the saddle) to Frog Tanks via what is marked Roger's Canyon on the topo. However, there is no trail there on the topo. The connector starts at 33.44008 -111.18609 and comes out at 33.46591 -111.21097. There's nothing that looks too steep there but the canyon appears somewhat tight on the topo. Either way, it's 9.53 from the trail head to the camp via the measurement on the track. Starting at 1:00PM that puts us there after dark so plan on hiking the finish with a headlamp and setting up in the dark. Saturday looks like a 22.17mi day. :sl: It's basically a balloon loop with a 15.78mi loop and a 7.96 entry/return tail. This will be a mean hike.

Your "shortcut trail" is Roger's Canyon trail.

You could cut off a mile or two by taking Plow Saddle Trail.

You can easily make it to Reavis Ranch by 5PM if you start from the north TH at 1PM.

Note the recent triplogs' reports of numerous creek crossings in Rogers Canyon.

After sleeping on it :wrt: and thinking about it :scared: I've decided to just go into Reavis and directly back out. This kind of mileage in a day and a half, although humanly possible, would be unpleasant. The factor of hiking in the dark, unfamiliar trails, numerous creek crossings, possible boulder hopping makes this a hump-and-a-half that would take probably longer than I figured. I'm just going into Reavis Ranch and back out.

I'll do this hike some other time when I can take Sunday also. Doing the original hike in 2 1/2 days is much more reasonable.

So you are coming in from the North or South?

North I guess. Out of the Reavis Trail Head there off of the Apache Trail Road.

As you enter the Reavis valley the trail will begin to make a right hand turn. Stop there and look to your left. Across a small saddle you will see a hilltop which is an indian village site. Walk over to it and check out the ruin. There used to be a broken metate still laying there. I am talking about a distance of less than 100 yards to go over and check this site.
