mazatzals - Saddle Mtn to Plateau Pt.

Post by te_wa »

This is an invitation for an overnight backpack.

I have a few buddies joining me on this trip for a night in the mountains. Weather has been good, around 60 and 35 so we're going in to see the great views to the west.
We plan to camp at a site about 2 miles from the actual Plateau overlook, so it will be a 5 mile ONE way trip to the camp, with an optional day hike to the Overlook that is 2 miles ONE way.

So you can do the 10 mile backpack, or take on the extra bit of walking to make it a 14 mile overnighter. I have hiked the portion of Saddle Mtn from Mormon t/h to the intersection of Thicket Sp trail. This section is IMO a easy/moderate trip, no elevation gains to speak of (follows an old road mostly) and the rest of the trail that "starts" at the Thicket intersection doesnt look too demanding either. A mellow but steady gain uphill.

read the description of this great hike, and take a look at the photosets. http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=1263

prepare for temps in the mid 20's. we may encounter snow patches and water runoff. i'll post details as the date nears.

its not a race, you should do fine. its a nice hike, not a leg burner, and im pretty lazy these last several months. but if you want to go the distance, we can summit Saddle Mountain in our spare time. :sl:

I've been wanting to hike in the mazatzals but haven't yet made it yet. It'd be nice to tag along with someone familiar with the area for my first trip.... what time would you be leaving from the TH? And how big of a group are you looking at? It'd be me and my boyfriend if we went... We're both interested in giving up the tent for the hammocks one day so we'd love to pick your brain on that as well.

Might be stuck installing wood flooring at my parents that week end. But if it falls thru, I'm in.

not completely sure, but we will meet at Fort Mcdowell casino (safe for overnight parking) at 8 AM Saturday.

you'll just need to count about 1 hour to the T/H.
for the record, hammocks are like chocolate ice cream. you can taste it once, and be hooked. or you can wait until your old then say as you kick yourself, "why did i wait this long?"

it is me and my girlfriend, my friends Juan and Marc, and possibly one other. you, BF, and kevin would make a nice group.
fwiw, 6-or so ppl is a perfect crowd for an overnight. im not looking for 15, but my comfort level as a qualified trip leader certainly is not intimidated by that number.
i have been out in this range for many trips, and discovered some very cool things about the area. Id like to share them with you. but, you must attend this trip to learn my secrets, grasshopper. :D

te-wa,

We're in if you'll have us. We've backpacked plenty but this will be our first with any hikeaz'ers so if there's any protocol we should be aware of lemme know.

i'll be in a red Montero parked at the casino, SE corner -you'll see the entrance when you take the left from beeline 87 onto Ft. Mcdowell rd - an a-frame sign may say "valet parking" or something to that effect. if you don see that, look for the entrance to the Bingo hall.
8am please

There may even be an extra bottle or two of freshly bottled homebrew waiting after the hike...

I'm not sure the forecast for Peeley is very accurate most hiking up in the mazzys esp northern slopes tends to be 20-30 degrees cooler than the valley

Tried to get out of this flooring thing this weekend. No go. :( Pretty disappointed.

@te-wa
We're all set for Saturday morning at 8 AM at casino parking lot. Two questions though: 1) is there any water source near the camp area? 2) Will my subaru outback make it to the TH or is high clearance required?
thanks -
