2017 Frye Fire

Post by cactuscat » Jun 07 2017 7:18 pm

Brand new fire going on Mt. Graham ... I assume it was started by lightning from the storm that passed through. It's not on Inciweb yet. I can see it from my house, but I am not great with the landmarks up there ... guessing it's in Marijilda Canyon or somewhere nearby.

Assuming it's the Frye Fire which has closed eight trails in the Pinalenos according to a Wildfire Update issued by the Coronado National Forest at 2pm today:

"Closures have been ordered for the following trails: Ash Ridge Trail #327, Frye Canyon Trail #36, Round the Mountain Trail #302, Deadman Trail #70, Noon Creek Ridge Trail #308, Gibson Canyon Trail #318, Arcadia Trail #328, and Heliograph Trail #328A. No roads or campgrounds in the Pinaleño Mountains are closed at this time."

The fire is now on Inciweb:

Holy Smokes...The whole damn Mountain is Burning... I may have to change my Mind about an August Trip....
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out & proclaiming, "Wow What a Ride!"

Actually it was still only about 700 acres at last update. Problem is that it is at 0% containment with resources stretched so thin across the state. This thing won"t be out until some good rain ... it was started by nature, and will be extinguished the same way. Eventually.

Right now it looks like it has jumped a good distance to the Southeast - the exact opposite of the direction it was expected to move. :(

Expanded closures as of this morning's Wildfire Update from the Coronado National Forest:

CLOSURES: An expansion of the existing Area Closure will be placed into effect at noon today. This will include all campgrounds, roadways and trails beyond the highway 366 and Forest Road 507 junction where the pavement ends. All non-fire traffic will be stopped at this point and must vacate the closed area due to safety concerns. The Coronado National Forest is working closely with Mount Graham International Observatory (MGIO) personnel to facilitate its operation.

Over 6,000 acres now ... reached Ash Creek Falls and beyond to Oak Flat ... seriously threatened the MGIO today (their live webcams have been fascinating!) ... Columbine and Bible Camp still in big danger ... now the owners of Turkey Flat cabins have been told to get what they want out by tomorrow - word is the entire mountain will be closed tomorrow. Oh, and the firefighters have had an outbreak of strep throat.

@SkyIslandHiker
Yeah ... it's a bummer alright. Glad I got to see what I did, but I'll be regretting not visiting some areas before this, too.

From a Wildfire Update late yesterday evening:
Closure: The Area Closure for the Frye fire has expanded to include all campgrounds, roadways and trail systems within the Forest boundary in the Pinaleño Mountain range including the Bible Camp, Turkey Flats and the Old Columbine area. Graham County Sheriff Officers will stop any non-essential-fire traffic to maintain safety in the closure area. The closure will remain in effect until rescinded. The entire official order and map is available on Inciweb at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/article/5221/35695/
