July 1, 2013-
GRAND CANYON, Ariz. -- Grand Canyon National Park officials have reported that a hiker has died deep inside the canyon in northern Arizona.

Park officials said they were notified Sunday of an unconscious female hiker about three quarters of a mile up the South Kaibab Trail from Phantom Ranch.

Rangers responded but were unable to resuscitate the victim, whose body was flown by helicopter out of the canyon.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death.

"Hiker fatality on South kaibab trail in Grand Canyon Natl Park

Grand canyon, Ariz. - On Sunday June 30 at approx 3:30pm GC regional communications center received a call from the emergency phone at Boat Beach with report of an unconscious female hiker approx 3/4 of a mile above Phantom Ranch.
Park rangers responding from Phantom Ranch initiated CPR upon arriving on scene, but efforts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful.

The body was flown to the South Rim and transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner. The woman was on a group of five, on their first day of a multi day back country hiking permit. The other members of the party were flown by NPS to the South Rim yesterday evening.

The high temperature for Phantom Ranch yesterday afternoon was 113 degrees Fahrenheit."

Yesterday afternoon during my road ride, Bumblebee, the SAR copter, flew over me at least 3 times...once with a loaded litter...we were hoping it wasn't this. :(
