Grand Canyon North Rim

Post by 38732 » Aug 11 2008 8:21 am

Planning on overnight stay at Phantom Ranch, and then hike out North Rim early morning in one day. This upcoming weekend (Aug.15/16). If start at 5:30 am is hike out to trail head by 3:00 pm "doable" ? What about heat as one ascends the north kaibab trail ? Thanks. Sanecat

Like anything physical, it depends on your fitness level. I wouldn't be surprised though, if you were to reach the rim by noon. With summer time temps what they are at the Canyon, you should hope you reach the rim well before that. Temps go down as you go up, but it's still hot.

As it's a near full moon this w/e, you could start even earlier than 5:30 & avoid the heat even more. Even w/o the full moon it's an easy-to-follow trail (highway) all the way to the Rim.
2 mph avg. is easily do-able on the NK.

It was ~80 at the N. Rim last week for a high temp, just FYI.
