Who are they looking for in the Supes?

Post by sirena »

I just got back from a 3 day trip in the Supes, and all yesterday I saw a helicopter looking for someone up and down the Red Tanks Tr. in the La Barge Box area. Then last night, at about 11:30 pm, I was camped near La Barge Spring and a helicopter flew all low by my camp and woke me up by shining a spotlight onto my tent. Scared the pumpkin out of me!! Anybody know who they were looking for?

It's hard to imagine they are still using helicopters for the missing Dutchman Mine hunter.

Maricopa County Sheriff helicopter searches are common occurrences in the Supersitions weather permitting, day or night. They have a small fleet of helicopters and one of them is equipped with infrared search gear. This county often dispatches helicopters as the amount of ground searching necessary to search an overdue hiker or backpackers route can quickly overwhelm the ground boot manpower that they have immediately available.

And no they would not be using helicopters at night to search for a missing person that has been considered down and deceased since December. If you should be overflown by a helicopter at night as Sirena was do not flash your flashlights at them or try to attract their attention as they may then consider you as the object of their search. What I do when overflown is give the scuba divers signal of just touching the top of my head a few times with one hand which means that I am ok and not the object of their search.

I was wondering about an "I'm OK" signal that could be used in that kind of a situation.
