Tourist hiker threatened by local in Nepal

Post by chumley » Sep 20 2017 7:38 am

This kind of thing seems inevitable as more and more people travel to specific places to go hiking.

For local communities, the influx of visitors is probably a good thing ... economic benefits of selling a room for the night, food, and/or guide services... until it becomes a bad thing with too many people, who some opine are less respectful or well-behaved than visitors from yesteryear (#broculture? 8) )

Anyway, maybe don't try to haggle on the price of a $1.50 cup of tea in Nepal!
• Horror video shows Gemma Wilson and stepson Charlie being chased in Nepal
• Pair were hiking Annapurna Circuit when they were attacked by tea shop owner
• Gemma said woman hit her with wooden plank before throwing rocks at her
• Confrontation started after Gemma complained about the price of a cup of tea
It's the best gopro hiking video I've seen this week! :)

Edit: Apparently the video posted on twitter includes the text of everything spoken, since it's difficult to discern by the audio alone. See: http://pic.twitter.com/cG6wjmdbMl

The tourists stopped for tea after hiking only 4.5 km of a 230 km trek. I'd be ticked at them too.

Man the twitter comments are pure gold. It's actually a little bit mind-numbing to read. Are there any scientific meta-analyses that show twitter makes people stupid? :pk:

It's just good at showing who already suffers that condition.
