Going NOBO from Montezuma Trailhead in mid March are there areas where it is difficult to end up the day at tent sites off the
snow ?

Mid March is the "normal" start time. Not likely there will be snow in the Huachuca's then, but if so it would only be for the first day. The border is at 5900 feet elevation and the trail drops back to that at mile 16, after topping out over 9000. See the databook available on the Arizona Trail Association website.
