I'll be honest, probably due to the fact I have always used Tracks and never used Routes it took me a few minutes to figure out what you meant. If I understand you correctly, I'm sure Route Scout will work just fine... if you want it to, it will let you know when you are off the track.

Personally, I've never been that concerned whether I was on or off my planned route, and yes, very likely because I can be so easily distracted.
Still, often those distractions lead to discoveries I would never encounter otherwise. But in general:
- If my plan was to follow a trail, I just followed the trail. Only if it became vague would I consult my GPS.
- If my plan was an off-trail hike (like much of my peak bagging), if the terrain allowed following my plan closely, I might consult my GPS a lot. But more often I simply follow the easiest route the terrain allows, which may not resemble my planned route at all.

A lot of info in the replies above! :lol:

Short answer: yes.

You can set how far off track you go before it notifies you (e.g. 100 feet). It doesn't care how you get back there, but once you're back to within 100 feet of the track it will stop telling you you're off the track! No need to hit every point along the way.

Thanks for the advice, and I can confirm that, yes, you are correct. I made a track go WAY off, and then back. As long as I was within 50 ft. of the track, RS never said anything! Glorious!

Another question, please.

My preferences for GPS units is to have the direction I'm traveling always toward the top of the screen. So, if I turn, the map turns under me, and I'm still headed towards the top of the screen. The one advantage I can think of: If I add a waypoint to the track that's labeled "Turn Right", and I'm headed south, it appears (on the screen) to be backwards.

Understand?

So, can RS be configured to always show my course as "up"?

Thanks for all the friendly advice,
Gary

In the lower left corner there's an N for north. Tap it and it will orient the map the way you are moving rather than north/up.

chumley, thanks for the quick reply. I took the phone, and went for another quick walk, and - "no joy in Mudville". Yes, there's an N in the lower left area of the screen, but the N changes to S, SW, NE, whatever direction I'm walking.

When I tap on it, the letter becomes "highlighted"(?), and my "marker"(?) on the screen changes from a small black circle with a red cone projecting out to a big red circle. That circle either moves to follow where I'm walking, or stays fixed in one location on the screen as I walk along, depending on whether I'm "centered", or not.

Regardless of the mode, the map was always North to the top of the screen.

I apologize if I'm not using the right words. For the record, I'm using a Samsung Galaxy J1, model SM-J100VPP, Android version 5.1.1.

Again, thanks for your help,
Gary

@garyc57
The highlighted direction letter and “cone” should indicate that the map turns depending on the direction you go. Non-highlighted direction letter and no cone and the map should always be facing north. The letter will change to indicate which ordinal direction you are actually moving.

I don’t use this feature though so I’m not totally familiar with it. I’m sure Joe can explain it fully.

@garyc57
Probably not great for navigation in that mode yet.

Normal fixed screen mode has a circle with a Galaga Tractor Beam. Theoretically it's the direction of travel.
Direction of travel mode has a circle with a dot. Theoretically the screen is the direction of travel.

You must be moving to be remotely usable is all I remember but probably still to jittery.
( 4.7.4 lifted a 60mph limit so tibber can use RS flying! )

Constantly redrawing all the data rotating uses more battery. Combined with not personally navigating in that fashion, it hasn't been refined.

Joe, I fully understand. Definitely not a show-stopper. Just a "geez, it'd be nice..."

Joe,
Another idea for the "geez, it'd be nice..." list

Along with the two distance figures at the top center (miles from and to), how about an "ETA at Dest"? Meaning, at the pace I'm going, what time will it be when I reach the end? The time doesn't have to be at the top, just somewhere easily accessible. BTW, good luck defining "pace". ](*,)

Thanks,
Gary

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

As Joe mentioned above, battery life is a concern, so how each feature affects battery life must be balanced against the perceived value.

Lots of ideas have a nice ring to them but at what cost? The more features, the more the energy cost in battery life.

Example: If RS shows 2.5 miles to go and I've covered 5 miles in two hours, with some basic mental math I can figure my ETA as an hour or so. Obviously, if I stop and smell too many flowers that time would change.

So, is In this case, how much battery life would you be willing to forfeit just to have RS give you a ballpark ETA?

Personally? None. :M2C:

I have 1,001 questions about RS, and how to use it, and I hate pestering Joe and/or this forum. Has a manual been written? If not, I'd be happy to volunteer. After all, the best way to get to know something, is to write the manual for it!

I only have an Android phone, so any differences to the iPhone version wouldn't be documented.

@joebartels I offer my services.

@garyc57
No manual, you're welcome to have at it!

There is the info screen on RS. Reading though it realized it's out of date.
I'll release RS 4.7.5 this week updating that with a few other minor updates.

Always happy to help!
The feedback panel is best for issues on site. Which is the help/comment/issue contact icons at the bottom of all pages.

garyc57 wrote:BTW, good luck defining "pace".
By chance there is already a "recent pace" function in place. Which is sparingly used for approaching waypoints audio alerts.

RS 4.7.5 "might" include
- ETA in the header tap
- fix the jittery "direction of travel" mode or at least make it better

iPhone users
iOS 12 turns Route Scout's friendly little voice into a choppy robot that auditioned for Max Headroom in 1987 but didn't get the part.

Everyone knows iOS slows down older model devices with updates so it only makes sense to hold off updating.

My route scout changed from a woman who could clearly anunciate splits that could be heard from my pocket or over my music when running. Today I have a mumbling man who sounds like he has marbles in his mouth. I can’t find a place in settings to change it back. He is worthless for for training purposes.
