Friendly Heads Up - Possible Improvement
If you have imported a route in RS for a future hike before 3:50pm ( 30 minutes ago ) please
1) stop and restart RS
- Android tap the device back key until RS closes
- iPhone double tap the home button then swipe RS up to terminate
2) start RS, delete the imported file then import it again

Just found and fixed a 90 day bug related to waypoints. This isn't anything to get excited about. Only a Possible Improvement for those that use waypoints. If you do nothing it will work the same as the past 90 days and be fine in a week.

It's minor and started mid August when a HAZ server update software. On Android after importing you could scroll the screen up to only white space. That white space is white error codes on a white background, which I ignored like the quarter billion requests for Secret Phx Waterfall hikes that roll in. In a future RS release it'll be black text =)

iOS 4.8.04 has an offline map bug
4.8.05 with a fix has been submitted for review

Did everything I could to get it through the moment I found out... 3h 10m ago
If a new import on 4.8.04 iOS is set to follow it will throw a few errors.
It will still work without offline maps.

State of the RS Union
- several iOS users have had an array of issues since spring 2018
- could be RS changes(wish), could be iOS changes
- iOS forced RS to change early 2018, asked for help beta testing iOS on Feb 15 2018 02:55 pm
- 3 out of a small gazillion volunteered, 1 did pretty much all the testing

known iOS issues
A) notably a half doz I know about - unexpectedly wipes out everything
B) irritating - skips sections / straight lines ( prev issue, just heard still an issue)
C) eerie - turn it on a day later and a huge track has unexpectedly been recorded. No mention of A or B.

Android
- Rock solid, a thousand horror stories will undoubtedly surface now
- cheaper, carrier & knockoff models have minor issues
savings pennies on android nets weaker/throttled hardware
1 out of ten crap tracks on other software verifies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just wanted to share where I'm at now. I created RS to benefit HAZ.
iOS makes up the majority, the benefit is bleak to neg.
Plan to keep RS for Android. Doing what I can to salvage RS for iOS.
For starters, rolling back to core functionality.

just out for Android, another day for iOS - rejected line 2 below mentioning Android on their platform...lol

Code: Select all

4.12.0
- Removed built in waypoints, burden on iOS memory and cpu.
- Removed off trail beep due to Android issue.
- rolled iOS build back to 10.3, 12.1 caused more issues in 1 week
- a few small adjustments other app devs suggest
Most issues surfaced after the built in waypoints.
Only benefits those that can't figure out importing a follow route.
It would be cool if removing solved anything... unlikely that easy.
Possibly for A above. Tough to decipher when it wipes out debug info.
Doubtful for B or C but need to see if it eases up crash reports.

After this I can roll back one, maybe two other aspects.

5.0.0 out today has a theoretical* fix for the most notable iOS issue wiping out login/files
* found/fixed major related issue

- Fixed file list stats issue that recalculated new files over and over until restart
- Removed storage calculation on file popup, everyone has enough storage for a route file now
- Removed Send Route, listeners possibly created memory leaks
- Re-added iOS dependencies that might help recorded gaps

iOS users that experience recording gaps, please submit both debug reports...
- e-mail error debug log
- send activity debug log
found at bottom of the settings page
RS Home > Settings ( within 24 hrs & before pressing begin activity or the error log file resets )

5.1.0 released today after 6 beta versions

Code: Select all

- found and fixed offtrack audio issue
- refactored promises & fixed issues that might cause odd race conditions
- added persistent backup for activity in progress for extra reliability
- added subtle yet effective low battery notice
- reformatted top-tap stats to a cleaner layout
- simplified debug to 1 button
- added confirm to begin activity if page just loaded
- added old data filter
ALL iOS below
Starting unexpectedly should* be fixed.
Straight lining mid hike should* be fixed.
*I was able to duplicate the above, apply changes and see solid results. Possible adjustments needed, no one with major issues volunteered to beta test.

1 to 10 mile spikes at start might* be fixed.
*nobody reported, I experienced, applied changes that seemed fitting then never experienced.

Three reported 8000 mi mid hike spikes... doubting

5.2.0 out next week or later will remove startup code that searches for pre 5.0.0 database. It slows startup and I had one instance where it wouldn't load. Simple closed and reopened fixed but I want to get rid of that code that now only possibly helps procrastinators.

Who wrote this wonderful code/app?
I've had some trouble getting my current version to exit, maybe the update will help with that.
Are there routes outside of arizona available for import?
The only complaint I have is that I have to carry an extra aux battery, as my phone can only last ~ 5hrs running route scout. OK, get a new phone.

Fantastic app.
Congratulations to whoever wrote it.

@mozdzen
Same dev team that created HAZ that subs for marketing, accounting, customer service, etc.

Hopefully better, your update was a good sized jump.
If you have any issues send a debug report, lower-right home screen.

I average 8+ hours / 20+ miles before dipping below 25% on a two year old built in battery on an S8+.
Airplane mode in the backcountry is key or phones burn a bunch of battery searching for cell towers.
Next major battery draw that is manageable is screen on time.
Hike Arizona it ROCKS!

Looks like I have version 5.2.7. Didn't know that was released.
