Route Scout - Never Stops Issue

Any idea why my route scout gives me 1 mile updates after saving and closing app on the drive home. Also have noticed when I go to use it that it evidently has been tracking in the back ground even though I haven't started an activity since the last time I used it.

Over the summer several reported being unable to stop RS. It would record and save fine. The issue is that it starts a new route.

I started experiencing it quite a bit in August and was able to dig in. Version 3.0.32 was released last week ( Android & iOS ) and addressed two possible bugs. In addition a better debugging system was incorporated into the app.

While I'm skeptical anything is fixed, thus far mine is working after one possible carryover. Anyone that experiences the issue MORE than once on RS 3.0.32 please send a debug report. Which is at the bottom of settings. Speaking specifically to the RS settings at the bottom of the RS home screen, the button is a cogs gear.

Anyone concerned about using excessive battery can always force stop the app after using it.

Android - tap the device back key until the app closes

iPhone - double tap home key, scroll to RS app, then swipe it up

I just noticed the update I've been out of town. I now know how many miles it is to fly from Lafayette to the Springs. :) I'll check this weeks as I have a little leaf peeping to do.

I had the same problem last weekend on my R2R hike. Couldn't figure out how to stop it. It recorded my 4.5 hour drive around from the North rim to the South Rim. I ended up uninstalling the app out of frustration. (I reinstalled later.)

It now asks me to allow RS to access my location even when I'm not using the app. I'm hesitant to push "allow" since that seems to be the problem. Also, why would RS need to know my location when I'm not using it? (It says on the allow/don't allow screen that RS needs to record when other apps such as the camera are in use. But why?)

If it is not set to "always" then it won't be able to record at any time you are not looking at the app with the screen turned on!

What some might consider to be "while using the app" is not what the OS considers to be while using the app. For it to follow or record a track while the screen is off, while it's in your pocket, while you're taking pictures, talking on the phone, texting, etc., it has to be set to "always" because any of those other things mean that you are no longer using RS and it will stop following or recording.

The "always" setting allows it to continue recording in the background.

I haven't had this issue recur since the latest update, but I haven't tested it too much either.

If it's still happening for you, quitting the app when you're not using it prevents the glitch.

Without this permission it will stop recording when you use any another app. Every gps app needs this permission to work when the screen is not on or you are using another app. The second RS isn't in the foreground with the screen on it will stop.

The Never Stops Issue is/was a bug where it would "Begin Activity" right after a previous activity. It's not related to the permission above.

If you are still experiencing the "Never Stops" issue read on.

Version 3.0.40 went live earlier today. This version has another possible fix and a better debugging system. Since I am not experiencing the issue on any device I need debug reports when you experience it. The "Send debug log" button is at the bottom of settings. ( Route Scout settings / not your phone settings )

While that will be semi helpful I seriously need debug reports after you finish any hike in cell service range. This is most likely when it is unknowingly starting a new activity. When it prompts for a reason just type the word "end" without quotes.

Then later if you notice it's still running be sure to send another debug log.
