The dead owl water is Beehive Well, which is in passage 18. If you are in the area and really need water I would try mountain view tank before beehive well. That being said, the dead owl water will not kill you (when it's 85 degrees you will pretty much drink anything).

Usually there's better water in the troughs, located in the corral opposite the big tank. Hopefully the rancher will install a solar array one of these days, rather than running all the way out there to run the gas pump every few... weeks, months...?

By the way, I sincerely hope it's okay to solicit AZT thru-hikers to post links to a journal or photo gallery from their trip. I think we can agree this is in the best interest of the trail and its users, past, present, and especially future, particularly given the relative dearth of shared experiences of the sort.

I agree. For example, the Continental Divide Trail is lagging way behind, is not even finished, and its major volunteer organization went out of business a couple of years ago. I think there is a new group (I've been getting emails, I need to check it out).

I should make my point, though, which is that long trails need a lot of loving care in the form of volunteerisim. That is why I plan to join the AZT's group next payday. And it doesn't hurt to promote them via blogs, Facebook, etc., etc.

I have long wished the USFS would build more long trails in Arizona. I would like to see a long trail from the Gila Wilderness or Blue Range Primitive Area going all the way to Flagstaff, staying almost completely in the high country. A trail such as this would be easy to complete during the summer months. I would guess it would be more than 300 miles long.

USFS for the most part doesn't build long trails, certainly nothing that would require collaboration with other forest districts, unfortunately. They're not paid to think big or appointed to take chances. But as mentioned before, a lot of that route is already in place, albeit the sort of person who would attempt such a route doesn't resemble a mainstream audience in any way. And won't, without maps, guidebooks, online information, trail signs, trail crews, trail blazes, and a whole lot of trail advocacy. Almost all of which is an uphill battle without the USFS at least tagging along in a less than hostile fashion.

Anyone heard / seen Krista lately? I've been following her blog and her last entry was a week ago in Flagstaff. She should be at the canyon by now.

I am slowly working on a trail journal based on the copious notes I took while hiking. It's at trailjournals under the very creative name of Andrew.

I look forward to reading about your experiences and thoughts on the passages you completed on the AZT. I'm interested to hear about trail conditions for different passages and view the many pictures you must have taken.
