The 2023?!?! Cyclical totals discussion thread.

How are things progressing this year? In keeping with the idea that you are only as good as the numbers you post, I'm up to 61,436' of elevation for the year and a modest 132 miles.
Added August 2019: Looking back 10 years later, I honestly can't think of anything more offensive or unhealthy to say about one's hiking, than the above statement. Thats was my OP in 2009. Hiking should never just be about the stats recorded.

January 31, 2023: Have at it.

...as the year winds to a close, I'll cross over 500,000' aeg tomorrow... looks like I may log 15,000 to 20,000 more over the last two weeks. Nice that the days will be getting longer again. Thinking about 2010 and reasonable goals. This was my first year to log on this site, and very interesting to review the prior year totals compared to 2009. Looks as if "training" hikes (days just to log additional miles) became a more prominent feature for a number of hikers. Ideally, that paid good results for the extra efforts.

177 miles so far this year!! trying to get closer to 200 before the end of dec. Quite proud of this, considering the year before my total was probably 30 miles or so!!! :) deciding what a realistic goal for next year will be...

I thought I would freshen this up for the year. A lot of impressive totals in the top 15 or so for elevation, which I couldn't help but notice that the curve of the elevation data once again resembles an exponential decay curve. We sort of owe it all to imike, since his exceptionally high yearly elevation total makes it look so similar to that type of curve.

not sure about this year... this week having very odd and misguided thoughts about delaying my trip to Colorado to put in a base training month over here in the Sacramentos... targeting 200,000' for the month... seeing if I could double last year's best month... not certain that is a good or a bad idea. June is a great month for it here, probably best weather in the nation before the monsoons hit...

What were or are you planning to do in Colorado? I had a trip planned to the Silverton, CO area in mid March but canceled it because I'm sick of traveling this semester. I think I'll do local stuff and may do a small trip in the Superstitions instead.

I'm to meet a friend from Tucson at the end of summer to hit the state high point mountain (...part of that 50 state thing) and then Long's Peak and Pike's Peak... and a fast run up the Incline... three or four day loop. I planned to go over a few months early and just hike here and there getting ready for that weekend and then the other fall events: R2R2R...2R2R????..... Mt. Lemmon Marathon... and an attempt at 7 loops on Guadalupe Peak.... then back out for C2Cx2... getting through and past this whole 60th year thing...

How are folks doing this year, are you meeting any goals? I had not really planned on hitting 250,000 vertical feet, but I will most certainly pass that sometime in the middle of the month. I will probably pass 260,000' for the year, but it is hard to say about 270,000'. For me, this is exciting as it will be my first year passing 250,000'. In a related note, it is my year with the most number of miles hiked. So far, I'm up to 722 and I expect to be around 750 by the end of the year. Also, looking at my elevation gain since I moved out here in 2006, I will be over a recorded elevation gain of 850,000 feet (assuming I make 260,000 for the year). If I'm still around or living someplace I can get some good hiking in, I might be over 1,000,000 vertical feet sometime in 2011! I don't know about you guys, but I think that's pretty good.

I've put in just over 200 miles in Grand Canyon since the middle of June when I moved out here. Hoping I can get in at least another 100 before the end of the year. I'd like to shoot for 1,000 miles next year, although 600-700 might be more realistic. I guess it will depend on how many winter trips I take.

I'm hoping for 500 miles this year but will have to really step it up these last 2 months-- at about 370 for the year but didn't get back into weekly hikes until mid-march. Not too bad considering I couldn't walk more than a neighborhood block at a time for most of last year. My back surgeon is a god. :)

well, not the year planned... and still not; I'm only getting to hike a couple days a week Oct/Nov... and most of December. So, with illness, injury and distraction... it will not be an over the top year for me. I am hoping to pick it up again after the first of the year and see if I can make 2011 what this year should have been. I'm also hoping to set a new personal one month record for myself, maybe in January if the weather cooperates. I need to lay a good base for the coming year. I was thinking about trying for 120,000'??

120,000' in one month is insane! Thats practically 6 months for some, and more than others will do in an entire year, or two, or a lifetime for some people living in flat boring places like Planet Houston.

120,000' in a month would be 20-30k more than my year. If I can pull 9,000' feet over November and December, I'll just barely crest 100,000' for the year. That's doubtful considering my hectic schedule, the cold weather onslaught and my left ankle suddenly aching. I'm hoping that will subside within the next couple days as I have a trip to Moab planned for this weekend...

This is the first year that I have logged almost every hike into HAZ and I am so pleased to see the cumulative results! Previously, my stats for each hike resided only in my hiking notebook and I never took the time to add them all together. Thanks to this wonderful site, I know that so far this year I have hiked almost 650 miles and topped 100,000 gain recently. :y: Even better- a little over a hundred of those miles were Grand Canyon miles!

...and I'm honored I got to enjoy some of those miles with ya! Quite the adventure!!

BTW... that's a really nice glamour shot... whoever took it must be quite talented... ;)

How many million vertical footers do we have on HAZ? Officially I'm at 854,679' since I started logging trips from 2005 on, but I didn't log a lot of hikes I did in 2006 and 2007 (mostly Mt Elden hikes). I could conservatively add 50,000' to my total and am definitely over 900,000'. Still, keeping it official and if I still live in a location where I can hike with a decent amount of vertical gain I should do over 150,000' in 2011. I may be able to cross the hiker's standard of being a true hiker: the coveted one million vertical foot mark!

Trucker's have their 1,000,000 mile club, should we have a 1,000,000 foot club? Would we have a jacket and handshake? Would Brandy be served? Would we have walnut or oak paneling?
