Is someone going to start a separate event "Rescue the Tule to Peralta dayhikers" leaving on the same date? Might be a good idea.

Hey Joe if your group is coming in on the Reavis Gap trail (117), the camp spot I'll be using is very close to the place where you cross Reavis Creek. I usually don't camp in the meadow area by 118 any more - too many people, not enough campsite accessible trees for hammocks. At the point where the 117 trail crosses Reavis creek, if you follow the creek bed North around 50 yards we'll be camped just to the left (West) of the creek bed.
I don't imagine that the backpack group will be in too much of a hurry to hit the trail saturday AM, you guys could stop in and grab some coffee, carb up with some oatmeal or whatever if you like. Unless we have some pretty pathetic stragglers it looks like we'll be off the trail way before the day hike group and can take your vehicles back to Peralta trailhead and have them waiting there for you. If there are two 4x4 vehicles in your group now, that could be enough vehicle coverage for us too. I've got a group of 8 signed up at ABC, and a couple of them are sort of iffy still. How many folks at HAZ plan to join the backpack group? We'll need a firm headcount soon so we can plan the vehicles.
I'm still planning to get out to Tule this weekend (likely on Saturday) and day hike in some portion of the trail, how far depending how ambitious I feel. I'll report back on the conditions. There's gotta be someone else around here who wants to knock off some training miles. Any takers?
joe bartels wrote:We miss the #118 Gap junction by about a mile, hence a couple miles out-n-back. We can go by Reavis but it will increase our AEG by about 1,500 ft. No one responded to that so maybe it's not an issue to the day hikers

I don't know how early you plan on breaking camp in the morning. I know if te-wa is involved it's like nine o'clock...lol
The 13 miles to the 117/109 junction is the most AEG for the day so I figure it will take us 6 hours.
Currently we have one small 4x4. Doesn't appear we have a second 4x4 so might have to hike to Tule also which probably adds another mile or so.

We are not coming in on the Reavis Gap Trail (118). The hike starts at Tule, not Reavis School.

What route are you taking?
We have 2
small vehicles, 1 is 4x4. We might have to hike a little of the road, there are mixed reviews on it's current state.
We all look forward to hearing what the road to Tule is like, I'd join you but I can not make it.

If you are needing water and Dripping Springs is 'dripping' too slowly, remember that with a few feet of rope, you can drop a bottle down into Reeds Water well (or chimney down into the well, either way).

OK Joe, maybe I'm confused

. I thought Reavis Gap trail was 117, not 118 (which is Fire Line trail). I looked at the track you posted and was assuming that you planned to take Tule Canyon (122) from the Tule trailhead, then turn south on 2-Bar Ridge Trail (119), and then continue SW on Reavis Gap trail (117) to the Reavis Ranch trail intersection (109), which is on the far north end of Reavis Ranch. Help me out man!
I'll definitely post an update after the exploratory trip out there this weekend. Would have been great to have you along, but I'll see you soon man.

joe bartels wrote:..........Andy are we key swapping (more of a key give as we don't need yours) with your group? In which case we'd probably need to start at 2am to cross paths or require us to hike by Reavis which either requires a couple extra miles or alter the route which adds something like 1,500 AEG (may add mileage too, IDK). Day-hikers also need two vehicles to accommodate the larger backpacker group, is Tule 4x4? Bob can you drive your jeep if needed? Ideas, thoughts, prayers...
I'd suggest keeping the keys with the vehicles and letting participants know where to find them. Stuff happens, and like I always say "the truck is no good without the key and the key is no good without the truck". Sometimes someone needs to 'bail-out' or otherwise return to the origin point. Or you could even miss each other on the trail....
It certainly solves the 'how will I get the keys to you?' question.

That sounds like a wise plan to me Kurt. We'll figure out a plan on where to stash the keys. And thanks for the tips on water availability.

I'll have to talk this over with Mrs. big_load. If I haven't hiked my legs off by then, I may be available for rescue duty from a rental-accessible TH.

I'm way off, sorry for the confusion. We do hit the Gap 117 mid-way. The Reeds tip is very helpful. Keeping the keys in a predetermined area will be better all around, thanks Kurt.
Andy we'll have to see what you find out about the road to Tule then we can PM key details and such.

If anyone else is
really going to show up, let it be known. There's plenty of room for four more.
The
route is about 36-38 miles.
Meeting 10pm Friday at Wally's near US60/Higley. Two hour drive then start hiking about Friday Midnight
Best scenario looks to be finishing 6pm, 8pm is more likely. It could be later...
We know we cross water on the Gap Trail at Reavis Creek at 13mi guaranteed. I have no clue on Reeds (approx 31mi) dependability. Yet judging by conditions nearby and photos of standing water in the Goldfields I think there will be plenty.

Reeds is perennial and Randolph spring will almost certainly have water.

Drewboy, I'm currently planning on doing this as a backpack, provided I am feeling 100% by then.

Hi nonot. I hope you'll be able to join us. I'm initially thinking to take off from Peralta trailhead around 7:00AM Friday. But maybe 6:00AM would be better on reflection, to reduce the odds of needing to finish up by headlamp. I'm guessing around 10-11 hours of hiking on day 1 to hit Reavis. Supes miles can be slow.
If Reeds water and Randolph Spring are indeed reliable, it looks like maybe 14 miles worst case between water sources. Carrying 3 liters between fill ups would seem to be plenty of margin in that case given the cooler weather. I wish I had time to also scout out the Randolph section. From reading it sounds like Randolph Spring is pretty easy to find. I'll have a gps along with route and waypoints as a backup.

Based on photos nearby I think the odds of finding pooled water in Randolph and other places are pretty good too.

You'll be hiking in/adjacent to the Randolph creekbed - as you work upstream you'll come to an old dam, Randolph Spring is not too far after that, right in the creekbed.
There is also (usually) a big pool in Randolph right where the rock turns
deep red, about 3/4 ish of a mile upstream of the confluence with Fraser. (maybe that's where they got the name "Red Tanks".. ain't those cowboys clever?)

It did and it was good.
Most of the pooled water was :yuck: but not all
