As an avid backpacker I was just wondering what other backpackers like to bring with them on their trips. I'm talking about luxuries since most of the necessities are going to be similar. Personally, I have to bring marshmallows for roasting after dinner. Sometimes a deck of cards is fun if you reach camp early enough. Is a dog a necessity or a luxury ?

Those aren't luxuries, at least not when the days are short and the nights are long.

If I'm going fast and light, I leave behind things like the extra change of pants, the fresh veggies at lunch and Lucky (who likes to stash rocks in my pack).

However, camp shoes, a sit pad and hooch are not considered lux items. These make me enjoy my time out in the wilds more, and that's what the whole experience is about. I'd rather be stinky, eating dried food and hiking with grown-ups than sitting on the cold ground, in sweaty shoes, drinking Mango Tang without the Captain. Life is too short for that kind of thing.

i hear that Sailor Jerry can take Captain Morgan in a cage match.
my luxuries are my hammock, (which doubles as a chair, triples as a bivy on the ground - if needed - and the tarp serves many purposes as well, last w/e we all stayed dry under my hammock tarp and sat at a picnic table for hours playing games and eating well)
oh and my other luxuries are my down booties from Goosefeet
and a stainless grille from the Dollar Tree that cost 50¢ and weighs 3oz (cookie sheet cooling rack)

I DO prefer Sailor Jerry - he has better tattoos. But, let's be honest...if you're gonna be dragging it across the Grand Canyon at 110deg, you don't go for the good stuff. It's a waste ;)

I haven't backpacked with you - but something tells me that there's a note of sarcasm in that post...

and that's why I consider them luxuries I don't need them to survive, but they make the whole thing more pleasant.. cept camp shoes, since swapping to trail runners I find no need for those things.

I will sometimes take my base gear along. Ya its an extra 20 lbs, but, you never know......finding a cliff you know nobodys ever jumped is a treat!

I have to bring my pooie. (pillow) It's small and light weight, but have to have it. Acually, it's the first thing that gets packed.
