A big thanks to cindyl for getting the modern part of the culture section together. If you've been happy to see fire lookouts, Osborn fire finders, windmills, or some of the other more modern thing appear as a culture label, it is due to her hard work.
A big thanks in general to the culture team as well. I think that the whole culture thing rocks - it is neat seeing the distribution of different types of cultural artifacts across the US>

Another benchmark aficionado was Bob Martin. Bob was a SAHC member who became quite well-known as the author of a couple of books: Arizona's Mountains, and also one about climbing Colorado's 14ers. He passed away a year or more ago--he was getting up there in his 80's, I think.

Up until the very end of Bob's life, Mikehikes would take Bob out to find benchmarks. Bob was getting pretty frail and had a lot of health problems. They tried to find ones where you could get pretty close in a vehicle, of course, since Bob could not hike far.

There are also the section corner monuments that could fall under the generic "benchmarks" label.

Any interest in a label recognizing old ranch facilities-cabins, fences, corrals? "When Cattle Was King" I"m always struck by the remains of this industry that was the economic engine of the 1880's-1950's. And if we do that, do we do Mining?

Added the discussion link to the culture label. I'd be fine with changing the title, but I also think that since most folks call all markers benchmarks, it might be easier for them to find the label if we leave it as-is and have the discussion link embedded in the label.

This is supposed to be my on-season up here but I'm debilitated by foot injuries, not to mention emergency forest closures thwarting me from my favorite hikes.

The ankle issue is no fun, but we still have lots of stuff around here that wasn't closed last week. it did seem like the best stuff was closed, though. I didn't do it more than 3 or 4 times, but my favorite loop in the Dry Lake Hills was the Sunset-Little Bear-Little Elden. That hike was something I was planning on doing a few times this summer. It remains closed and who knows when it will be open again.

I was hoping to do a loop from my house Christmas Tree-Little Elden-Little Bear-Heart-Christmas Tree, but the one you speak of sounds nice too. I actually never been on Little Bear, but I'm a pretty big fan of Sunset. As long as the closure is in effect and my ankle heals, I'll probably end up doing Christmas Tree-Heart-Sunset-Elden Lookout, but perhaps in the opposite direction.

Funny, I didn't see this forum topic until now, and just because of HPP's comment on a recent photo of an actual Benchmark, I did a search to see where that came from and I found the topic.

A bit of (modern) history: After I had nudged to get a couple of these labels added, I was made an Admin. Now I can create the label rather than bothering the rest of the Culture team. It's been really neat to see these things (Benchmarks and Cag Shots included!) spread like wildfire throughout the site.

As always, if anyone has an idea for an additional label that may have been overlooked, feel free to PM the Culture, Flora, Fauna, or Geology teams and we'll do our best to get it added.

Not sure where to put this, since there are two forums that mention the various types of survey marks. Since I've been hanging out with a surveyor lately, I've learned that not all of these markers are benchmarks.

So... I recently created two new culture labels for different types of survey markers: one for Azimuth Mark and one for Reference Mark. These are super easy to recognize and identify apart from benchmarks because they have those words, "Azimuth Mark" or "Reference Mark" on them. I have already gone through historically labeled "Benchmarks" and made the change when necessary. Since both of these types of marks have arrows in the middle, it was easier to pick them out even at thumbnail views. There are more survey marker labels in the works, since not all survey disc (or otherwise) marks can be called bench marks. I'll let you know as I create them so you can label your photos accordingly.

I knew that but i didn't know how to ID them from each other. Thanks for fixing them.

I say just go with a new "survey marker" label. Generic and would cover just about any kind of marker out there.

I know there is at least one other marker that is from a foreign country (chumley), and they don't do things quite the same, eh? i'm considering a catch-all for things like that as well as lesser photographed survey markers such as cave markers, public park markers, etc. that don't really fit into one of the main categories.
