This isn't really political in nature but since it fits in this forum better than anywhere, here it is! I ran across it and thought ya'll would enjoy it:

Sarah Palin Attempts to Summit Non-existent Alaskan Peak
Alaska's former governor and VP candidate sparks Twitter flame war over trumped-up adventure on Denali
See that Tweet above? That's Republican Party sweetheart Sarah Palin letting the world know about her plans to climb the Sweettooth, a spur of Denali, with her husband Todd and 16-year-old daughter Willow. The ambitious adventure is part of her planned Discovery Channel series, Sarah Palin's Alaska. Impressive, no?
There's only one problem: "Sweettooth" doesn't exist on Denali. She might mean "Sugartooth," but even then, climbers who know the area are scratching their heads. "Sugartooth" is a multi-day, highly technical climb on sheer rock; despite Palin's ability to scale the ranks of Republican leadership, it's unlikely she's got the skills to send a "5.10b/c with short sections of A2, 16 pitches," according to Alpinist.com.
The Alaskan outdoor blogosphere is understandably taking Palin to task for 1) claiming to be an Alaskan mountain woman without even knowing the names of the places she's going, and 2) exploiting their state in a selfish bid for spotlight. Some speculate she'll fly in to the Ruth Glacier, take photos and go home. "Sweettooth = name of ridge you got wrong while trying to sound like a mountain woman," went one criticism.
But who are we to judge? Check out the following footage from ace climbers Zack Smith and Renan Ozturk, who won a McNeill-Nott Award for the third ascent for the "Sugar Tooth" (scroll to 2:32):

I love these political threads...because you can figure a lot out about a person by the way they post and whether you'd most likely enjoy hiking with them or not. You can tell who's having fun and who's just being :bdh: minus the hitting dude. Oh wait thats a horse ;)

Yeah, Jim got rid of it, then he put it back again, then he got rid of it again. Some guy from Okeyhoma who could not write a coherent sentence thought we were a real bunch of nasty folks, I guess. He did not like the "teabagger" nickname, especially. It just sent him into a nucular funicular.
Look like Jim also got rid of my :STP: post. What gives?

If you happen to be commenting on my comment. I was just making a general post...had nothing to do with the erased post because I didn't see it. You do know Joe is from OKeyhoma

Huh? No, you and I posted at the same time. I was responding to Jeff. Jim H is the one who manages this department, so that is why I mentioned Jim. And no, I didn't know Joe is from Okeyhoma. I bet he is glad he is in Arizona, though.

What about B.O? Picking on the antics of a sitting president is far more entertaining.

Joe is from OK, but he moved here decades ago.
I did get rid of what I saw as obvious trolling by someone who had no prior posts in the forum or any other HAZ contributions for that matter. Most of the posts were back and forth between the two of us. It was going nowhere, and the guy was doing what he could just to keep it going. I probably wasn't helping either. The one I deleted from Elizabeth was just part of the flaming, as I saw it. Sorry.
Either way, someone removed my flora/admin privileges, so I guess I rubbed Joe, or someone else who is a Moderator, the wrong way and I won't be doing any of that anymore.

Yeah, but this thread was never about that, it was about one specific person. You can start that thread if you like, I guess. If you do, you can rest assured ( I think) that no one here will step in and tell you that you are disgusting, and need to get your moral compass checked. I have noticed that for all of the differences in this site's members, we keep it civil and the serious name calling tends to be non-existent.

Politics and religion are dangerous topics... Generally speaking I've found it's best to leave them alone. Has anyone ever changed the mind of a zealot!? Calling someone who believes in limited government, lower taxes and personal responsibility a "teabagger" is no better than calling a liberal a liberal! I'll stick to hiking topics and avoid most of the controversy...

There is truth in that. It is important to recognize that we were as serious about what we posted in as much sense as we were joking. We knew what we were posting, but did other people? Not everyone did. Still, Joe started the forum after the immigration thread was started, so it isn't completely without precedent here to have arguements on some level, though petty name calling is. I started the teabagging references. I didn't think it would gain the momentum it did. I also didn't think people would really care all that much as most people here who don't share a view tend to ignore it. By Friday night the thread looked like it would die. Given what does inevitably occur in politics and religion discussions, it might be worth posting some rules, or having further moderation by someone. It clearly irritated the guy who posted his post which called us all disgusting, and needing to check our moral compass. He tried to back pedal, but it came out as it was written.
The teabagger name actually was one that they called themselves when they first got media attention, or the media called them that. Once people realized what it meant, they changed to tea party. People like us, people who I would suspect see them as greedy middle aged whites who want things, but don't want to pay them, still call them teabaggers. There are far more flaws with them then solid arguements. Why was it that only after a black democrat was elected that all of the sudden government spending was too much? Why was it that a huge military deficit for the previous 6 years of the last administration was just fine, but deficit spending domestically is bad for the country now? I hear rhetoric about personal responsibility, but how likely are these people to voluntarily give up medicare, social security or other government services that benefit them? Teabaggers or tea party people, what ever you want to see them as, claim no leadership. Palin calls herself a leader of them, so that how they got brought into this. When I posted it, I saw it more as making fun of Palin, then them, but I wasn't opposed to making fun of them.

Anyone who thinks another person is being a horse's *** for posting his or her own opinion needs to check him or herself. This is still America; you don't have to agree with me or even like what I have to say. Don't worry, I'm sure the feeling is mutual and I would rather hike alone, anyway...

Paying attention to people like the Tea Party only serves to give them what they want - attention. I propose this: all Tea Party members here on HAZ who hate government and "Socialism" so much must immediately stop hiking on National Park and Forest lands. Don't want to pay taxes for it? Don't like the bureaucracy that runs it? Fine, it's no longer yours to use...

I agree and would say that posting a horse while alluding to something else and insinuating that we, or I, are the animal a poster is alluding to is like calling the pot calling the kettle black. Welcome to the party, RL. The difference on Saturday was the morality level and the personal judgment made publicly and directly at us. Had it been anyone from a highly involved PageRob to a lightly involved Redroxx or AndreaP,it would have not seemed like trolling.

Uh, right, Joe is 38 or so, and he moved here in high school, so that is 20+ years, or "decades", because it is plural.

This is the only rule Joe cares about..that and everything should be PG rated.
If you have an opinion then state it. Supporting your opinion with facts is best. Responding to members you disagree with is permitted if courteous.
The forum is not the place to post photos of a hike or a triplog. Instead post them with the links found at the top of every page.

If that is true, than what I did actually was inline with that rule, since his original response post was the complete opposite of courteous, and as such would not be permitted. We and he were still PG, and nothing here ever got beyond that, but he was not courteous until he tried to backpedal out of it.

alright... I started this topic and I knew a little fun would be had but I didn't plan on all of this. I would have posted the article about fake mountain climbing no matter who it was about but it just so happened to be Palin who I thought would be a much more lighthearted topic than say the immigration forum topic. Had someone not posted that we were all disgusting, it seems like it would have stayed that way. Of course, when our topics show up on google searches, we need to be ready for those things.
