Warning this has nothing to do with feral cats.
Edit for biz reasons.

@Alston Neal
Thanks, Alston... With friends like you, who needs enemas !? Don't give the mighty one any ideas I can't live with, please. If I knew anything about wool blankets other than they're itchy, I'd contribute something worthwhile, I promise... Guess you could say I'm sheepish...

Remind me again, aren't we related?
If so you definitely got the deeper end of the financial gene pool.

I've heard a couple great blanket stories. One was a knowledgeable dealer spotted one in the back of a beat up pickup in Cheyenne, being used as a saddle blanket, turned out to be very rare and valuable. Sorry, more details escape me.

Yes. My maiden name is Neal. If we are related, now that would scare the cats out of me!

...and Alston dares to chastise
me !?

(The fact that he has good cause has nothing to do with anything...)

Probably the most well known would be the one from Tucson on the Antiques Roadshow. It was a First Phase Ute style blanket that was purchased by a dealer that did the appraisal on air. Those are running from 500K to750K.
I know of one dealer that was driving down the road and saw a Navajo child's blanket hanging over a fence. He bought it for nothing cuz the folks were using it to cover their lawnmower.
Six thousand in resto, sold it for 20K.
Bear in mind we have as many as 10 calls or e-mails a day and 98% is crap. This is why it's so exciting to see something really rare.

Update..
I just received the results of the dye testing. The testing was done at Thomas Jefferson University using the Beckman DU-65 Spectrophotometer.
All four samples test as organic cochineal dye. One sample from the piece put it at 1840-1855, the other three samples will date it 1855-1865.
The piece will of course date to the newest dyes putting the blanket at a solid 1860 + or - five years. I'm in the process of writing out all the documentation, which is why I'm posting now, cuz my brain is getting fried and I needed a break.
I called the lady who owns it this morning to tell her the results. After talking with her for sometime she brought up what I've been hoping to hear.....
I would be interested in selling it.
To be continued...
