MapSource : calculate AEG?

I have plotted a route in MapSource, and wanted to know, roughly, what the AEG might be. (If you are familiar with Aravaipa, it would basically be a day hike loop around Mining Mountain, where there's some very steep gradients ...) I'm trying to find the setting / view / whatever, but so far coming up with nothing. (The route only lists rough distance, that I can find.)

Ok... So now I'm officially curious. Aside from cost, what differentiates the "official" Garmin-sanctioned maps and the "other" maps. What kind of data structure or inclusions must the third party maps contain to make them more "useful"?

Accurate, searchable place names is a big one for me. Many non-Garmin maps seem to do that OK. Trail info is nice, but you can never be sure that it's up to date. Garmin topos have routable trails, which is something you can't get in NG Topo (you have to laboriously create it yourself at max zoom to get anything accurate). I don't know whether any other mapping products that have that feature. Garmin Points of Interest data is quite useful, but not crucial.
