Rob, have you ever camped at Buckfarm Point?
No, I haven't. Or wasn't aware that I was if I did.

Rob, I could say the same thing about camping in the 1960s and 70s... :?

Haha - not what I was meaning at all by that! Very good point, however...

Take Forest Road 310 from East Rim Drive, 2 miles East of Grandview Point turnoff ... .6 miles will get you into Kaibab National Forest, where you can pick your (free and unregulated) spot! :D

Anyone have any recommendations for car camping off of FR 328, just NW of Tusayan?

@arizona_water

FR328 is a sedan-accessible road. It's also fairly popular for dispersed car-camping. Kaibab NF limits car-camping to 100-feet from the road in dispersed camping corridors (FR328 is one of them).

Download the Tusayan district MVUM (here) so you know which side roads are open for travel too. There are options for smartphones and Garmin GPS devices too. The side roads are not camping corridors, so you have to park on/adjacent to those roads for legal camping.

There's a forest office in Tusayan, and this road is patrolled regularly due to it's high use. So I'd pay particular attention to closed areas.

Once you get across the railroad tracks and west of Bright Angel Wash, solitude increases a lot.

How close to Tusayan? Chumley's information is perfect if you want to stay close to Tusayan and the GRCA Entrance.

If you are more adventurous, continue west on FR 328 about 30 miles (90 minutes) and you have Havasupai Point and Bass Camp out by the South Bass Trailhead. You will need Backcountry Permits for SE1 (Signal Hill), SE2 (Ruby Point), or SE3 (South Bass Trailhead). They are all on the Rim and have great views. If you can't get one of the campsites, you can camp in Use Area SE0. SE2 will be the closest to Havasupai Point to watch the sunrise.

High clearance definitely advised. And have some extra cash for crossing the Rez.

"South Bass Trail and Pasture Wash Trail visitors may be charged an additional fee by the tribe for crossing the Havasupai Indian Reservation."

@al_hikesaz @chumley

Thank you both so much for the details. I'm looking for something near the south entrance, so I think FR328 is the ticket.
