Oh, Behave!

If you read my review on the Flatiron trail, you will see I encountered Idiot boy. If you haven't read the review I will sum up Idiot boy. He was about 12-14 years old, part of a small group (2-3 adults and 4 kids). As Idiot boy was going down the steep part of the trail, just below the top, he threw 2 large rocks (small boulders). The first rock destroyed a cactus. The second rock went down trail, causing panic and scramble. The adults in the group did NOTHING. Next, Idiot boy went 5 feet off trail, and took a leak. The adults in the group did NOTHING.

So, what is the proper way to correct someone like this? My first reaction was to treat him like a big rock (small boulder) and throw him in a cactus or down trail. I then thought, should I talk to the kid or the adults about Idiot boy. I know if it happens again, the kid will hear how to preserve a trail, and the adults will get an earfull about supervising kids.

What do you think.

Maybe - if you looked like this - people wouldn't attempt ANYTHING around you.

No sudden moves, no glances in your direction.....holding their breath while you walked by.....

 I love it! On a serious note, while exploring the east side of Joshua Tree National Monument, I met an ol' man like that, rifle hanging in the back of his pick-up, side arms strapped on. His two boys, each riding there own motorcycles, rifles in scabbards mounted on the sides of the bikes, each packing a side arm and large knife. Yep chatted awhile, I'm keeping an eye on his boys, and when he asked where I was headed I pointed east. When in fact my camp site was west. Yep, was not comfortable around these guys :gun:
:) On a lighter note, I don't ever recall meeting any idiot boys/girls on the trail. I guess I'm fortunate.

I've only been to the Flatiron once, I think it was in '95 or '96, but I met up with stereo Idiot Boys. Except they were probably in their early 20's. I was on the way back down and was resting at the waterfall-pool area. There were probably 20 other people there, and suddenly this basketball-sized boulder comes careening down the canyon! It narrowly missed two ladies, and I had to jump out of the way at the last second.
I am not tactful. I yelled at the top of my voice "who threw that rock??". No answer, so I yelled again "who threw that @#$% rock?!?!?". Still no answer. Now you all know that I am scruffy and tote a gun. I was not the only one with a gun there that day, and there were a lot of pissed off people. A lady came up to me and said "were you the one who yelled about the rock?". I said yes, and she pointed at two guys coming down the canyon and said it was them.
As they came past me I said "are you the jerks who rolled that rock?" They said it was an accident. I said "a @#@% accident? You almost killed these two ladies, you $#%#& idiots", and went on for about 30 seconds chewing their butts. They were edging down the canyon away from me, and finally one said "hey, it was an accident, OK??".
At this point I desisted, since it was raise or fold and there wasn't much more I could do without attacking them (never a good idea!). So they scampered down the canyon as fast as they could and several people congratulated me on chewing them out. I have to admit it felt kind of good!

Is there anyone on this site that was there that day and remembers this event? If those two guys are on this site, they know who they are, and they are VERY lucky no one was hurt. Including themselves.

Observed several boys blasting away on a trail in the Superstitions several folks asked them to stop, but they kept at it. A couple of people called 911 from there cell phones, but the Sheriff dispatcher told them to call the forest service and hung up. I borrowed one of the cell phones and called the sheriff to report several boys shooting at cattle and within the hour several deputies showed up. They were arrested (one was on probation) and one of the guns was stolen.
