HAZ Learning Workshop: Route Manager
Tuesday, April 2, 2013
7:15-8:30pm
ASU Tempe Campus

I had discussed doing this in a forum thread a while back, and I decided to try it and see how it goes.

Because I’ve heard first-hand from regular HAZ users and seen a fair number of questions posted in threads and comments, I thought this would be a good subject to explore some more.

So, I will be hosting a workshop where we will go over the functions of the HAZ Route Manager. We will cover many topics, including:

1. How to upload a GPS track and save it to the HAZ hard drive
2. How to edit your GPS tracks including splitting tracks, joining multiple tracks, adding and deleting points, etc.
3. How to create hikes and edit tracks from other HAZ users for your own use.
4. How to gather and report data from GPS tracks such as mileage, AEG, and time.
5. We may also visit how to post your edited tracks to HAZ and also how to geocode photos to the track (depending on time available).

I am by no means an all-knowing expert on all of this. While I will lead this course, it will be a participatory discussion, where anybody in attendance will be welcome to ask questions and provide input and share their experiences with everybody. It will be a collaborative learning effort.

So if you are interested in learning more about the HAZ Route Manager, please sign up for this event. It's free! :)

It will take place in a fully mediated classroom at ASU. You may bring your laptop if you wish to “play along”, or you can just watch as everything will be shown on a projection screen in the classroom.

There is free parking adjacent to the classroom building in the lot on the southeast corner of Mill Avenue and University Drive. (Exact classroom location and directions will be provided later).

The classroom has a limited capacity, so I will ask that you please sign up for this event to make sure that we have enough space reserved. Thanks!

Very informative and helpful session, thanks a million! Great to put some faces to names, and verify that some of you are not just cyber creatures but actually flesh and blood!

Thanks guys for doing that. I learned a few things. Sorry for bailing first and being unsocialable, one of us was extremely bored, and we're kinda social rejects anyway.

That's okay, it gave us a reason to talk about you behind your back.

Seriously, thanks for putting on the class. Learned a lot last night.

I drove 300 miles for that?! I guess it was ok, great to meet a few HAZzers I hadn't met before and to catch up with the rest of you, I guess. Uncle Chumley's next class will be held at the grand canyon, south rim, followed by a 37 mile dayhike to the middle of nowhere that only JJ3 and JoeyB and Mister Bob will attend while the rest of us empty the kegs at the BA cocktail lounge. ;)

Questions I should have asked last night:

1) Is it possible to create a water report without creating a triplog?
2) How about a land status (state, federal, private) layer on the maps?
3) How about a mile marker layer on the map?

A triplog is req as there are thousands of standard spring names ( ie: dripping springs ). Seems it would be a disorganized mess to monitor. Open to suggestions.

Would need a GIS shapefile source for the layer request ( private sounds difficult to maintain )
