Need for GPS on AZT

Planning a thru-hike. Have hiked CDT in 1999 and GDT in 2001 without a GPS. Will a GPS be helpful here or is the AZT fairly well marked? According to AZT site it sounds like there are a lot of false junctions near the border. Is this a problem or overstated? Any comments would be appreciated.

Just want to say Thanks for all the GPS help. FYI I did have a hard time with fitting all the Track and Waypoints onto the Etrex 20. On the phone with Garmin help desk didn't help any. It all showed up on BaseCamp, said it transferred to the GPS, but could not find it. I finally figured it out myself. Once I started deleting Waypoints after hiking Passage 1,2, and 3, the Waypoints I was missing near the end of the trail started appearing. Garmin said the Etrex 20 would hold thousands of Waypoints, but that is not the case. Adding a 32 g card did not help as it needed to go to the GPS hard drive or whatever you call GPS storage. Awesome trail so far. Made it to Patagonia "Gathering Grounds" the morning of the third day for breakfast. Started out with some Trail Magic, which is always a good sign. Meet two couples at Parker Canyon. They were AZT members and trail stewards. They had already arranged a shuttle (swtrekking.com) to take them to the border to start a section hike of Passage 1. They were kind enough to let me join. After three Passages I have seen no illegal trails. Not one squirrelly trail that might indicate that. I did however veer off course a couple times in Passage 2 due to cow trails. Glad to have the GPS track to tell me immediately I am hiking with heifers. Lots of good water in all three sections. Doing 24 mile days makes a difference in reaching more water sources. Great Trail. This is "Sucking the Juice Out of Life." --Keep Smilin', Dick Mallery
